Nicholas Braun & Chris O’Dowd Call The Sheep Detectives “Fargo Meets Paddington”

The characters have a surprising advantage: before he died, George used to read them mystery novels, which taught them how to solve crimes. This will be helpful, considering the lead investigator, played by Braun, is very new to the job. The story also features a unique sheep named Mopple, played by O’Dowd, who’s different from the rest of the flock. Written by Craig Mazin (known for The Last of Us) and directed by Kyle Balda (Despicable Me), The Sheep Detectives boasts a star-studded cast including Bryan Cranston, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Molly Gordon, and Emma Thompson, among others.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Braun and O’Down participated in a discussion called “Debunking AI,” where they talked about how good they are at spotting AI, the challenges of acting like sheep, and who they enjoy working with the most.

Who Would Solve The Sheep Detectives Mystery?

The quirky plot of The Sheep Detectives, playfully described as a mix of Fargo and Paddington, centers around a team of unlikely and amateur detectives – both animals and people – who are trying to crack a murder case. When asked to imagine who would solve the crime in a different reality – Cousin Greg, Rory Trenneman, Wolverine, Professor X, or Elaine Benes – the actors gave it some serious thought.

O’Dowd suggested Professor X would likely be interested in the character because he seems to be a robot. Braun jokingly admitted he didn’t know who Roy Trenneman was – a character from his co-star’s show, The IT Crowd – but predicted that Trenneman would be the one to figure things out. ‘He’s the guy who’ll solve this,’ Braun said.

The AI predicted Cousin Greg would stumble into a win, but Professor X already knew the outcome – everyone agreed it was a funny and satisfying result. However, they didn’t want to get involved in solving actual crimes. O’Down explained, “I’m not a police officer! I think I’d just let the criminal go – I don’t want to be chasing anyone around!”

Nicholas Braun’s Favorite Scene Partner For The Sheep Detectives

O’Dowd didn’t get to act with another person; he was actually recording his lines alone as a sheep, which proved surprisingly difficult for the AI to understand. Meanwhile, Braun was keen to talk about who he’d most enjoyed working with, even though the story behind it was a little sad.

There’s a scene with Hugh Jackman and me where we actually had a little exchange during filming – a line delivered to each other. It didn’t make the final cut of the movie, but it was my favorite moment. It was just special to be able to share a scene with him and speak to him directly.
