Horror anime isn’t always given the attention it deserves, and that’s understandable. Although some works by horror master Junji Ito have been adapted into anime, many other chilling stories haven’t made the jump to the screen. When it comes to zombies, fans are eager for anime that delivers a good scare. Fortunately, there’s a decent amount of zombie anime available, allowing us to recommend five of the most frightening undead series.
We’re focusing on the best zombie anime, so many shows – especially those from outside Japan that often include humor or fan service – didn’t make the cut. If you’re really craving zombie action, though, you might also enjoy series like Zombieland Saga, High School of the Dead, and Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead.
5.) Hellsing

Many people consider Hellsing a supernatural series primarily about vampires, and that’s accurate. The story centers on Alucard, who is actually Dracula, as he battles numerous dangers threatening England and the world. The anime features vampires creating zombie-like servants, and a major attack on the Hellsing Organization demonstrates how frightening these weaker creatures can be. While known for its action, Hellsing seamlessly blends into the horror genre, offering plenty of scares for those seeking them.
4.) The Empire of Corpses

Among the zombie films on this list, The Empire of Corpses is probably the most obscure. Released in 2015 by Wit Studio—the animation house behind popular series like Attack on Titan, Ranking of Kings, and Spy x Family—it offers a truly unique take on the undead. The movie features all kinds of zombies and cleverly blends historical events with fictional characters in a thrilling, flesh-eating adventure. You won’t believe the cast—it includes figures like Thomas Edison, Ulysses S. Grant, Sherlock Holmes, and even Victor Frankenstein! Beyond the scares, The Empire of Corpses is a visually stunning film that’s worth checking out, even if you’re not typically a fan of zombie stories or anime.
3.) Kabaneri of The Iron Fortress
This is Wit’s second appearance on our list, and it was difficult to choose between their two zombie-themed shows. What makes Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress particularly scary isn’t just its frightening zombies; it gives them enhanced power and speed beyond the typical slow-moving undead. The show also creates a strong sense of confinement, as most of humanity is forced to live within mobile fortresses, giving them only one chance at survival. While often compared to Attack on Titan, we actually found Kabaneri to be the more frightening of the two.
2.) Seoul Station

Seoul Station is an animated movie that comes before the popular live-action film, Train to Busan, widely considered one of the greatest zombie movies ever made. This anime expands on the initial outbreak, and many find it even more frightening than the live-action version. The zombies in Seoul Station are particularly disturbing, with wide-open eyes and a gruesome appetite for anyone they find. While its animation style is unique compared to other zombie anime, it actually enhances the film’s impact.
1.) Gyo

It’s no surprise that Junji Ito tops this list! His anime, Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack, isn’t about typical zombies, but features something far more unsettling. Instead of the undead rising from graves, aquatic creatures emerge from the ocean, attached to mechanical, spider-like legs, and wreak havoc on the world. The truly horrifying part isn’t just the creatures themselves, but how these devices bring them to life. Interestingly, this disturbing anime was animated by Ufotable, the studio famous for Demon Slayer, showing their talent for supernatural horror. If you want the most genuinely creepy zombie anime, Gyo is the one to watch.
