Darth Maul’s intentionally frightening design was central to promoting The Phantom Menace. He was presented as the potential new face of evil in the prequel trilogy, making his apparent death at the film’s end a letdown. Initially, he felt like another underused character, similar to Boba Fett. Luckily, George Lucas recognized this mistake during the production of The Clone Wars and brought Maul back into the story. Since then, Maul has been a key figure in Lucasfilm’s animated projects, even starring in his own series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.
While at the premiere of the Shadow Lord Season 1 finale, Sam Witwer discussed how the show has given his character, Darth Maul, a chance to evolve beyond his origins in The Phantom Menace. He explained that Maul has never had time for self-reflection, always being driven by fear and a desire for power. This series, however, allows Maul to pause and consider his own motivations and what heroism means to him. Witwer noted that Maul’s approach to saving people differs from both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Palpatine, and that Maul himself would see a clear distinction between his methods and Palpatine’s – though audiences might disagree, seeing striking similarities.
Shadow Lord Lets Star Wars Fans See Maul Like Never Before

While The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels developed Maul into a more complex and sympathetic character, he always played a supporting role. Though James Witwer had many ideas for expanding Maul’s story during those shows, the focus remained on other characters. Shadow Lord features interesting new characters like Devon Izara and Captain Lawson, but it’s the first time Maul has been the central figure in a visual story.
Now that the story has evolved, Dave Filoni and his team can really delve into Darth Maul’s character and explore his motivations in new ways. The Shadow Lord series already did a fantastic job of this, especially in the episode “The Creeping Fear,” which showed young Maul being trained by Darth Sidious. These flashbacks allowed viewers to learn about Maul’s past and understand his weaknesses. They also revealed that Maul had surprisingly honorable intentions, making him a complex antihero rather than a simple villain.
Though Dave Filoni created the character of Shadow Lord, he emphasizes that Sam Witwer has truly made the role his own. Filoni shared during a recent event that Witwer brings incredible energy to the part, and he’s always looking for ways to showcase it. He noted that focusing the story on Maul, as they’ve done, has been very effective. Witwer has consistently delivered a fantastic performance as Maul, ever since first voicing the character in The Clone Wars. He’s taken a character who was initially a fairly simple villain in The Phantom Menace and given him real depth and complexity.
We already know how Darth Maul’s story ends – tragically, with hate and death. Even as he searches for his own identity and tries to save others from Palpatine’s cruelty, his path ultimately leads to destruction. The upcoming second season of Shadow Lord promises to explore Maul’s motivations further, bridging the gap between The Clone Wars and Rebels. While we expect he’ll continue to succumb to anger and darkness, there are sure to be fascinating twists and turns along the way.
