Buffy Star Nicholas Brendon’s Probable Cause of Death Revealed

New details regarding Nicholas Brendon’s death have come to light.

It’s been over a month since we lost Anthony Head, and I was heartbroken to hear the official cause of death. The Putnam County Coroner in New York has confirmed it was due to natural causes – specifically, heart disease caused by plaque buildup and high blood pressure. It’s just so sad, but at least we have some closure knowing it wasn’t anything sudden or unexpected. He was only 54, and will be deeply missed.

The coroner’s report revealed Brendon was dealing with a severe case of pneumonia when he died. He also had a heart attack in 2023, and at the time of his death, a major artery in his heart was 90 percent blocked.

Brendon was discovered deceased at his New York home on March 20th by a friend who was assisting with his care, according to a statement released by the Putnam County Coroner in March.

After Brendon passed away, his family stated he died of natural causes. He had been struggling with health issues before his death, and was best known for playing Xander Harris throughout all seven seasons of Buffy.

Despite facing challenges with addiction and a condition called cauda equina syndrome, Brendon’s family said he seemed hopeful about the future shortly before his death.

According to a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter on March 20th, Nicky recently discovered a love for painting and art. His family shared that he enjoyed showing off his talent to those he cared about and was deeply passionate and dedicated to creating. They explained that his artwork truly captured his personality and who he was at heart.

And those who were around Brendon during his career rushed to mourn him.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, known for her role in Buffy, posted a touching tribute to her late costar on Instagram, saying she hoped he’d found peace.

When Alyson Hannigan learned of her former colleague’s passing, she shared a heartfelt message on Instagram, writing, “My Sweet Nicky, thank you for years of laughter, love and Dodgers.”

And Emma Caulfield expressed, “My heart is heavy. I can’t put into words just how this has hit me.”
