This Crime Game Could Be a Perfect Blend of Yakuza & GTA, but Is Looking Less Likely Than Ever to Come Out

Creating video games is challenging, even when everything goes smoothly. It’s tough to turn a great idea into a fun and playable game, and many promising concepts don’t quite work out. Plus, building, marketing, and releasing a game requires significant time and money.

Even experienced game developers sometimes struggle to release ambitious projects, and the recent difficulties with Gang of Dragon are a prime example. This first game from Nagoshi Studio promised a thrilling crime story with exciting action, aiming to offer players something similar to GTA VI or Yakuza but combining the best elements of both. Unfortunately, it now seems likely the game will never be completed, which would be disappointing for gamers worldwide.

Gang Of Dragon’s Development Woes, Explained

Everything about Gang of Dragon suggests it should be a hit. As the first game from Nagoshi Studio, led by renowned developer Toshihiro Nagoshi, it combines the engaging qualities of the Yakuza series with the exciting storytelling seen in Grand Theft Auto. The game’s trailer, shown at the 2025 Game Awards, created a lot of positive anticipation. Gang of Dragon offers a unique alternative to the very American setting of GTA VI, potentially carving out its own space among popular crime-focused games. However, Nagoshi Studio is currently facing difficulties. Development has stalled, and there are reports that NetEase, a major investor, may be withdrawing funding, leaving the studio short approximately $44 million needed to complete the game.

In addition to other costs, the game’s developer would need to pay NetEase to break away from them. Despite actively seeking new investors, there’s been no good news on that front. Recently, fans noticed the studio briefly took down its YouTube channel and all videos for the game, which has raised concerns about the project’s future. Unless another publisher steps in with funding at the last minute, it’s becoming increasingly doubtful that fans will ever be able to play Gang of Dragon.

Gang Of Dragon Looks Like A Blast, Which Is Why It Would Be A Shame For It To Die Early

As of now, Gang of Dragon has only been previewed a few times, and most of the excitement around it comes from the trailer shown at the Game Awards. That trailer introduced Ma Dong-seok as Shin Ji-seong, the game’s main character. The teaser promised a thrilling crime story filled with action, racing, and danger as Shin Ji-seong battles thugs, fights with swords, and navigates the criminal world of Shinjuku City in Tokyo. Because Toshihiro Nagoshi previously worked on the Yakuza series, the game already appears to have a strong foundation in the genre and understands what it takes to be successful.

The trailer suggests the game will feature the intense action combat that fans of the Yakuza series expect, making it a central part of the gameplay. The story appears to be more realistic than the increasingly outlandish plots seen in recent Yakuza games. It would be unfortunate if the game isn’t released, as its development costs might be too high for the new studio to handle without financial support from a company like NetEase. This situation could be a clear example of how expensive game development has become, particularly for large-scale, high-budget titles.

So, I’ve been following the news about Nagoshi Studio’s new game, and it’s looking rough. They’re a new studio trying to go big, aiming for top-tier quality right out of the gate, and it seems like that ambition might be their downfall. The main investor is pulling out, and other companies are probably hesitant to jump in. I’m hoping someone else picks up the project – maybe another developer, or even Sega bringing Nagoshi back to turn it into a Yakuza spin-off. But honestly, that would probably change the game too much and lose what made it special. It’d be a huge disappointment if this game never sees the light of day, because everything I’ve seen so far looks incredible and really different from other games out there.
