As the first game from Nagoshi Studio, led by renowned developer Toshihiro Nagoshi, it combines the engaging qualities of the Yakuza series with the exciting storytelling seen in Grand Theft Auto. The game’s trailer, shown at the 2025 Game Awards, created a lot of positive anticipation. Gang of Dragon offers a unique alternative to the very American setting of GTA VI, potentially carving out its own space among popular crime-focused games. However, Nagoshi Studio is currently facing difficulties. Development has stalled, and there are reports that NetEase, a major investor, may be withdrawing funding, leaving the studio short approximately $44 million needed to complete the game.

In addition to other costs, the game’s developer would need to pay NetEase to break away from them. Despite actively seeking new investors, there’s been no good news on that front. Because Toshihiro Nagoshi previously worked on the Yakuza series, the game already appears to have a strong foundation in the genre and understands what it takes to be successful.

The trailer suggests the game will feature the intense action combat that fans of the Yakuza series expect, making it a central part of the gameplay. The story appears to be more realistic than the increasingly outlandish plots seen in recent Yakuza games. It would be unfortunate if the game isn’t released, as its development costs might be too high for the new studio to handle without financial support from a company like NetEase. This situation could be a clear example of how expensive game development has become, particularly for large-scale, high-budget titles.
