Classic NickToon Character Was Removed by Nickelodeon For Being “Too Weird”

Nickelodeon’s early animated shows, known as “NickToons,” featured some truly unusual characters. While shows like CatDog, Ren & Stimpy, Invader Zim, The Angry Beavers, and SpongeBob SquarePants were already pretty strange, one Nicktoon didn’t stay on the air for very long. According to the creator of Hey Arnold!, a character named Lana Vail appeared in the show’s first episodes but was later removed. The story behind Lana Vail is definitely an odd one.

A recent rediscovery of an old interview revealed that the creator of Hey Arnold!, Craig Bartlett, talked about a character named Lana who intentionally made Arnold feel awkward. Originally, Lana was planned to be a resident of Arnold’s boarding house and serve as a sort of antagonist to him, designed to playfully tease and bother him in ways that might also make viewers uncomfortable. While she did appear briefly in a few episodes – even having a single line asking Arnold to turn on the AC in the sixth episode – the idea of a character specifically meant to make Arnold uneasy was quickly dropped.

The Time When Arnold Returned

Premiering in 1996, Hey Arnold! was among the first NickToons to hit the air on Nickelodeon. The show ran for five seasons and also spawned a movie, leaving fans with many unanswered questions. Fortunately, the creators finally released Hey Arnold! The Jungle Movie in 2017, which took Arnold and his friends on a jungle adventure and revealed what happened to Arnold’s parents. The series hinted that Arnold’s adventurous mom and dad had been lost in the Amazon, and the movie brought them home.

The movie, released nearly fifteen years after the original series ended, brought back Arnold’s parents and finally showed Helga admitting her feelings for him. Lana wasn’t in the film, but the boarding house got bigger with Arnold’s parents moving in. So far, the creator, Craig Bartlett, hasn’t suggested the show will return, although Arnold and his friends occasionally reappear. Nickelodeon often revives classic characters in new video games, and this month’s Nickelodeon Extreme Tennis: Next! will feature Arnold and other Nicktoons in a quirky sports game.
