Doctor Who and EastEnders favourites sign up for 5’s Play for Today as cast confirmed for season 2

The second season of Play for Today has announced its cast, including Archie Panjabi, known for her role in Doctor Who, and Kaye Ainsworth, a star from EastEnders, who will both play important characters.

The upcoming season will feature six individual films, beginning with “Wild,” which stars Daniel Mays, Joel Fry, and Amit Shah.

The new film, written by Lewis Wren and directed by BRICK, is a funny and dramatic story about surviving in the beautiful but harsh Scottish Highlands.

Lou, Dev, and Alistair are three longtime friends who make it a yearly tradition to go wild camping. What starts as a fun trip filled with jokes, reminiscing, and casual video blogging quickly turns challenging when they get lost, run out of food, and old tensions cause their friendships to fall apart. They must then fight to survive, both the elements and each other.

Wild is a surprisingly funny, moving, and disturbing film that examines the blurry line between bravery and foolish risk-taking. It also thoughtfully explores how harmful ideas about what it means to be a man are contributing to the growing crisis in men’s mental health.

The next movie will be called The Quiet Hour and will feature Panjabi and Paul Kaye, who starred in Small Prophets.

Written by Sarah Louise Madden and directed by Margo Roe, the story unfolds over a single, intense night shift in a National Health Service hospital.

The film features Panjabi as Riya, a nurse struggling with burnout, regret, and unresolved issues from her past. Kaye plays Fred, a confrontational amputee whose arrival creates significant tension throughout the night.

Riya is struggling with a hospital that’s falling apart: it’s short on staff, and she’s constantly dealing with critical emergencies, including patients who are very sick and a serious mistake that almost had deadly consequences. All of this is starting to take a toll on her ability to stay calm and professional.

As a real movie lover, I was immediately drawn to this story. It centers around Riya, a woman wrestling with a difficult past and a strained relationship with her teenage daughter. The film follows her through one particularly tough night where everything comes to a head. It’s a really honest look at the emotional toll healthcare workers face – the burnout, the need for compassion, and the small, everyday acts of courage that keep everything running. It’s a powerful story, and I think a lot of people will connect with it.

The third movie, titled ‘Village Idiot,’ will feature Phyllis Logan, known from ‘Murder Most Puzzling,’ alongside Max Harwood (‘Black Mirror’), Angus Imrie (‘The Road Trip’), Ainsworth, and Kathryn Drysdale (‘Bridgerton’).

This week’s episode, penned by Samson Hawkins and directed by Rhys Aaron Lewis, features Logan as Barbara, a determined English grandmother. When developers plan to tear down her cherished cottage to make way for a high-speed train line, she dramatically chains herself to it in protest.

Harwood plays Peter, a polite and efficient employee sent to deal with Barbara – only to realize she’s his long-lost grandmother. This sets off a hilariously uncomfortable clash: Barbara uses her strong will and talent for protesting, while Peter desperately tries to save his job and reputation.

As the dispute escalates, attracting media attention, protestors, and concerned townspeople, the two parties are forced to consider the true meaning of “home” and whether family bonds can withstand such a public and isolating conflict.

Village Idiot is a funny and heartwarming story that keenly portrays a changing rural England, mixing hilarious moments with truly touching emotions.

Antonio Aakeel, known for his role in “Slow Horses,” leads the cast of the fourth movie, “Closing Time,” alongside Ellora Torchia from “House of the Dragon,” who plays Laila.

So, I just read the episode description, and it sounds really interesting! It’s written by Mina Barber and directed by Dan Sloan, and it’s about Mo – he’s a really talented newcomer who’s helping out at his uncle’s kebab shop. I’m already hooked!

Mo has always dreamed of being a chef, but he’s kept those aspirations to himself. That changes one night at work when he meets Laila, played by Torchia – a considerate lawyer who feels stuck in her relationship.

Laila and Mo meet by chance and quickly fall in love, bonding over late-night talks and cooking together. Laila pushes Mo to follow his ambitions even as he worries about his visa, while he encourages her to rethink her current life and pursue what she really wants.

The new film, The Nine O’Clock Trot, features Johnny Vegas, known for Red Dwarf, and Kalli Tant from Inside No. 9. It’s being called a funny yet moving and dramatic story.

The movie, written by Joe McNally and directed by Harry Machray, tells the story of Annie (Tant), a young woman who has just finished college and spent the last six months as a full-time caregiver for her grandfather.

Annie is struggling. She’s alone, out of work, and has no money when her partner unexpectedly passes away, leaving her with a funeral bill she can’t pay. Without any help from family and feeling lost, she decides to keep his death a secret and avoids accepting a publicly funded funeral offered by the council because she finds the idea upsetting.

Annie wants to give her loved one a meaningful farewell, so she seeks help from Father Adam, the local priest. However, she soon discovers he’s dealing with his own personal struggles, and her simple act of kindness quickly becomes complicated. As things escalate, Annie is forced to consider her own limits and how far she’ll go to honor the person she’s lost.

This heartfelt and surprisingly humorous film delves into the complexities of grief, the challenges of social care, and the often-hidden burdens of being a caregiver – ultimately showing how far we’ll go for the people we love.

The movie, The Castle, centers around three siblings – Connor, Jamie, and Mia – portrayed by Oliver Nelson (known for After the Flood), Dylan Hughes (from Ludwig), and Matilda Flower (Trying). They must learn to survive on their own when their mother unexpectedly vanishes.

Written by Jack Bradfield and directed by Emma Turner, the film follows a couple struggling to manage their lives. They turn their home into a temporary stronghold while awaiting someone’s return.

Narrated from the perspective of Connor, a creatively imaginative middle child, The Castle explores the complicated bonds between siblings, how kids cope with difficult situations, and the imaginative stories they create for comfort. It’s a heartwarming and moving story about the challenges of growing up quickly and learning to help yourself before it’s too late.
