The creators of the hit show The Bear unexpectedly released a special standalone episode yesterday, May 5th, on Disney+. This comes as they’re working on what appears to be the fifth and last season of the comedy-drama.
The latest episode, called “Gary,” features Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal, who both star in and wrote the episode. They play their characters, Richie and Mikey, once again.
This episode takes place before the events of The Bear’s first season. It follows the group as they travel to Gary, Indiana, to support Richie and his then-wife, Tiffany (played by Gillian Jacobs), before their daughter, Eva, is born.
The journey begins well, but Mikey starts acting strangely. We later learn he will tragically die by suicide before the first season of The Bear even airs.

Following a heated argument where Mikey predicts Richie’s child will resent him, the two men drive home. This moment could have significant repercussions for the fifth and final season of The Bear, anticipated to be released this summer.
The show shifts from the past to the present, focusing on Richie who is driving alone. As he enters a highway interchange, another car crashes into him.
We don’t know what happened to Richie – is he alive, seriously hurt, or worse? And how will this affect the next season of The Bear, especially now that he and Sydney had just become owners while Carmy stepped away from the restaurant?

Curtis shared a photo with her co-star Abby Elliott on Instagram, celebrating the completion of the show. She wrote about how amazing it was to work with the talented crew, writers, and producers on the series created by Chris Storer, and how much she enjoyed telling the story of this wonderful family. She also affectionately referred to Abby Elliott as her “baby Berzatto bear.”
All four seasons of The Bear, plus the character Gary, are now streaming on Disney+ in the UK. You can subscribe to Disney+ for as little as £5.99 per month.
