New Look at The Punisher: One Last Kill Hypes Jon Bernthal’s R-Rated Violence

Next week, Marvel will release The Punisher: One Last Kill, a special feature on Disney+. A new trailer has dropped coinciding with the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again. The trailer shows a dark and violent look inside Frank Castle’s mind as he’s pulled back into a dangerous conflict with a growing criminal organization. Jon Bernthal delivers a powerful performance as the troubled antihero.

A new teaser for the upcoming special was released during the finale of Born Again Season 2, showing some fresh footage. Despite the first season ending with a setup for Frank Castle’s revenge against Wilson Fisk’s AVTF after his imprisonment, the show didn’t explain why Castle wasn’t involved in Season 2. The reason was due to Jon Bernthal’s schedule – his commitments to One Last Kill and Spider-Man: Brand New Day prevented him from appearing in Born Again. Hopefully, the special will address his absence. The new teaser emphasizes the violent moments from the original trailer, and includes a few glimpses of previously unseen footage.

Is that it? Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, is back in a new special presentation, “The Punisher: One Last Kill,” premiering May 12th exclusively on Disney+.

Punisher: One Last Kill Promises to End a Chapter For Frank Castle

We recently spoke with Jon Bernthal, who also served as an Executive Producer and co-writer on One Last Kill, during our Summer Preview. He shared his goals for the special, explaining they really wanted to stay true to the original comic book and please its fans. From the beginning, the main question was: how could they show Frank Castle going from a place of intense pain and uncontrolled rage, focused solely on revenge, to finding a new purpose and something worthwhile to fight for? Bernthal believes the story offers a fresh and interesting direction for the character, as Frank does ultimately discover some meaning in his life.

The biggest question surrounding One Last Kill is how it will bridge the gap between Frank’s current, rage-filled state – as shown in the released footage – and his future role in the more lighthearted Spider-Man: Brand New Day. He doesn’t need to be completely softened, but it seems hard to imagine this version of Frank fitting comfortably alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker. However, their contrasting personalities could create an interesting dynamic, and it’s exciting to think about how they’ll interact.

I’m so hyped for The Punisher: One Last Kill! It’s coming to Disney+ on May 12th, and I can’t wait to see it. I’d love to hear what you all think – let’s chat about it in the ComicBook Forum!
