The second season of Daredevil: Born Again culminates in a showdown between Kingpin and Daredevil, but it’s not the battle fans might have anticipated. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio have a fantastic on-screen chemistry, developed since they first worked together on the original Daredevil series in 2014. Their characters have clashed numerous times, and each fight has felt unique. This season of Born Again had a particularly difficult task: to effectively follow up on the dramatic conclusion of Daredevil Season 3.
Many viewers anticipated a fierce, all-out fight. Interestingly, the show had already given us that – Daredevil confronted Kingpin following Vanessa’s death, and they engaged in a violent battle that ultimately felt inconclusive. Matt understood the core issue: neither man was willing to yield or let the other win. Both were determined to prove their dominance over New York City. However, the conclusion of Born Again Season 2 took a surprising turn.
Matt Murdock Realized There Was Only One Way To Save New York

The showdown between Daredevil and Mayor Fisk begins in a courtroom, a fitting place to settle their conflict. Murdock subpoenas Fisk as a witness, and the Kingpin eagerly accepts. While Karen Page is officially on trial, Matt’s true goal is to expose the Kingpin’s actions to the public. He frames Daredevil as a protector of New York, battling a mayor who endangers the city. Fisk immediately overplays his hand, arguing the public doesn’t need to know about his activities at Red Hook – essentially admitting wrongdoing.
Matt has video evidence related to the Northern Star’s sinking, but no one else can confirm his story. In a surprising move, he takes a drastic step to bring down the Fisk administration: he publicly reveals his secret identity as Daredevil. This makes him a witness against Fisk, creating a situation where neither man can back down. Matt forces a standoff where they both face consequences – he’ll be punished for his actions as Daredevil, and Fisk will lose his power.
Daredevil and Kingpin Have One Final Face-Off

The citizens of New York turn against Wilson Fisk and rush the courtroom. Both Daredevil and Kingpin have intense moments in the hallways, leading to a chaotic scene where the crowd attacks Fisk. While Kingpin is a formidable opponent, he’s overwhelmed by the sheer number of people and would likely be killed if Daredevil didn’t step in. Matt argues for a peaceful solution and offers Kingpin a deal – a chance to walk away.
The Attorney General has made Fisk an offer: if he resigns as mayor, he’ll be let go without facing charges. Matt urges Kingpin to take the deal, mirroring a conversation from Season 1 about forgiveness and punishment. While Kingpin isn’t worried about being punished, the idea of simply being allowed to walk away enrages him. This sets up a central theme for Born Again: Matt’s Catholic faith, which is particularly important because Matt believes he—and not just Daredevil—will ultimately have to answer for past actions.
I was really struck by how powerfully Catholic and Christian themes were woven throughout the story. It’s heartbreaking to see Kingpin, the one truly responsible for everything, walk free, almost into a perfect life, while Matt, the hero, suffers the consequences. But even with all that, Kingpin isn’t truly free. I remember Vanessa wanting them to leave New York and start over somewhere peaceful, but he wouldn’t. Now, seeing him standing alone on that beach, it’s clear he’s paying a different kind of price – the price of his own choices and the loss of everything he had.
In the second season of Daredevil: Born Again, Matt Murdock is uniquely positioned to both forgive and punish. He understands that the real consequences of Wilson Fisk’s actions – namely, his complete isolation after losing Vanessa – are far more devastating than any prison sentence. Stripped of his power and utterly alone on the beach, Fisk faces a personal torment that feels worse than any traditional punishment, a true hell of his own making.
Daredevil: Born Again Season 2’s Ending is Perfect for Matt & Kingpin… But Still Has Flaws

The final showdown between Kingpin and Daredevil feels thematically right, but it still has some significant issues. These problems are both within the episode itself and carry over into Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again. The biggest issue is the lengthy hallway fight, which feels included more for style than substance – a nod to similar scenes in the original Daredevil series. However, it’s hard to believe the Attorney General would still make Fisk an offer after he’d killed so many protesters, pushing the story into unbelievable territory.
Another issue is that Kingpin’s story isn’t finished. The beach scene echoes a storyline from the comics, which led to an arc called “Return of the King,” bringing the Kingpin back to New York. Since we know Kingpin will appear in Season 3 of Born Again, it seems likely the show will move directly into that storyline. This makes the dramatic confrontation between Kingpin and Daredevil in Season 2 feel less conclusive, and weakens the impact of that scene. Marvel would have been better off keeping Kingpin out of the picture for a few years – or even permanently.
