The sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen recently concluded after a short six-month run. Interestingly, the author initially didn’t intend to include any characters from the original series. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo unexpectedly launched in Weekly Shonen Jump last year as a sequel, taking place 80 years after the original story, which limited the number of returning characters.
The sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen jumps ahead in time so much that it was difficult to include characters from the original series. In fact, creator Gege Akutami initially didn’t intend to bring anyone back. He worried fans wouldn’t like seeing familiar faces in the sequel, as he explained in a statement shared on X (@soukatsu_) with the release of the final volume in Japan. However, after collaborating with artist Yuji Iwasaki, Akutami ultimately decided to include some returning characters near the end of the story.
Jujutsu Kaisen Creator Didn’t Want to Bring Back Characters in Sequel
Akutami, the creator of Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, explained the reason for using a different artist on the new series. Because Modulo takes place in the future of Jujutsu Kaisen, Akutami was concerned that similar character designs would lead to fan theories and confusion. They worried that drawing characters like Usami might make them look too much like existing characters, such as Nanami, causing unnecessary speculation and distracting readers from the story.
Akutami explained that having a different artist handle illustrations helped address a concern about how fans might react to seeing familiar characters again. He originally wanted to avoid bringing back old characters, or at least keep it to a minimum, fearing negative reactions from long-time readers of Jujutsu Kaisen. However, positive fan feedback to the new artwork by Iwasaki led them to ultimately include those characters near the story’s end.
What’s Next for Jujutsu Kaisen?

Now that Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has finished, the author, Akutami, has stated that this is the end of the Jujutsu Kaisen story. The sequel takes place many years after the original series and provides a conclusion for the world of Cursed Spirits. Although some questions remain, Akutami doesn’t currently plan to add to the story. However, fans will still have new content to look forward to.
A fourth season of the anime Jujutsu Kaisen has been confirmed, adapting the ‘Culling Game Part 2’ arc. While a release date hasn’t been announced yet, the new season will continue the story immediately after the events of season three, focusing on battles featuring characters like Kinji Hakari and Panda. You can currently stream the first three seasons on Crunchyroll.
