Most of the Hogwarts teachers have been cast, although they haven’t announced who will play the mischievous poltergeist, Peeves. However, one major character remains uncast, which isn’t entirely shocking since their biggest appearance in the first season will be mostly from behind. The role of Voldemort is still open, and rumors are swirling about who might play him. The latest buzz points to Paul Bettany, famous for his role as Vision in the Marvel movies.
Jenson Ackles recently spoke with Screen Rant about speculation that he might play the villain in the upcoming HBO remake of Harry Potter. He confirmed the rumors are untrue, stating, “I’ve heard that rumor too… Unfortunately, it’s just a rumor.”

Bettany jokingly said he’s had enough of wearing prosthetics after more than a decade with Marvel. Given that he even forgot the name of Voldemort, suggesting he isn’t closely reviewing scripts right now, his comment doesn’t help fans figure out who will play the Dark Lord. While there are a few likely candidates – one of whom has been linked to the role before – the show’s creators might be keeping the casting a secret. That would definitely add excitement to the Season 1 finale.
Who Could Play Voldemort in HBO’s Harry Potter Show?
Besides Paul Bettany, Cillian Murphy has often been mentioned as a possible Voldemort in the new Harry Potter project. He’d be a strong choice for the villain – many fans think he’d be perfect, especially after his performance in Batman Begins. However, Murphy himself has said the rumors aren’t true. While actors sometimes keep secrets about roles, particularly when contractually obligated, it’s unusual for fan-suggested casting choices to actually happen.
Andy Serkis, known for his role in Lord of the Rings, has also been suggested as a strong candidate to play Voldemort. Matthew Macfadyen, from Succession, would also be a great fit, though it’s unknown if he’d be interested or even considered. Many actors have already demonstrated the cold, emotionless quality needed for the role in past performances. However, most will likely remain tight-lipped until HBO officially announces casting.
