Slasher films are a hugely popular part of the horror genre, and with so many to choose from, some really good ones often get lost in the shuffle. One such hidden gem – a clever and funny take on the slasher formula – recently became available to stream on Tubi for free, giving horror fans a chance to discover it.
I was so excited to see that The Final Girls finally landed on Tubi on May 1st! It’s a really clever horror comedy from 2015 starring Taissa Farmiga as Max, a teenager dealing with her mom’s death. She and her friends get pulled into one of those classic 80s slasher movies, Camp Bloodbath – the one her mom was a star in! It’s wild watching her try to survive the killer with a machete, and she actually has to team up with her mom’s character from the movie to escape. It never really got a wide release in theaters and has been hard to find streaming over the years, so I always felt like it was a hidden gem, and I’m glad more people can watch it now.
The Final Girls Is a Love Letter to 1980s Slasher Films
The 1980s were a peak period for slasher films – the scary movies popularized in the 70s by films like Black Christmas and Halloween – and their influence is still visible today. The Final Girls is a funny and touching tribute to those 80s slashers, cleverly using and acknowledging the genre’s familiar tropes. The film’s setting, a summer camp terrorized by a masked killer with a machete, is a clear reference to Friday the 13th. The characters also fall into classic slasher roles: the ‘final girl,’ the rebellious character, the athlete, and the brain. What’s different is that they know they’re in a slasher movie and understand the unwritten rules for survival – like avoiding sex or alcohol. The film even playfully mocks some of these clichés, going so far as to create a joke about the common flashback trope, complete with a black-and-white sequence revealing the villain’s backstory.
As a huge fan of horror, I have to say The Final Girls really surprised me. It’s a super smart and funny movie that knows exactly what it is, and if you’re into slasher films, you absolutely need to see it. What I loved most is that underneath all the scares and laughs, it’s a genuinely touching story about dealing with loss and remembering the past. It’s got some truly memorable scenes that will have you both screaming and cracking up, and it’s just a really well-made film overall. Plus, it’s officially “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics giving it a 76% score and audiences agreeing with a 71% rating!
