Fans of the Yakuza series had a feeling, and it’s now official: the new game, Stranger Than Heaven, tells the story of how the powerful Tojo Clan first came to be.
You’ll play as the same character, Makoto, throughout the entire game, which takes place over 50 years. A detailed explanation from RGG Studio is included below.
The story follows Makoto’s move from the United States to Japan, where he seeks to overcome the discrimination he faced back home. It begins with his journey across the Pacific.
The game features a fantastic voice cast, with actors and singers like Snoop Dogg playing the role of a smuggler called Orpheus. And, naturally, he’s perfect for the part.
Although Stranger Than Heaven is clearly connected to the Yakuza series, it doesn’t play quite like a traditional Yakuza game starring Kiryu.
You’ll continue to enjoy classic gameplay like exploring cities, fighting enemies, and playing minigames, but this time with a bigger focus on music and a completely revamped combat system.
Okay, so Makoto is seriously good with music. He can sample sounds he finds all over the city – like, really listen to everything – and turn them into tracks. Then, the cool part is you get to build bands and have them actually play the music he creates. It’s a really neat system!
Managing bands is the game’s biggest side activity, and it’s a fantastic way to earn money for more challenging tasks.
So, the combat system is really unique – you actually control Makoto’s left and right sides separately. It took some getting used to, but basically, the shoulder buttons and triggers on each side do totally different things. It’s kinda like controlling two characters at once, which is pretty cool!
You can defend yourself by blocking with one arm and immediately counterattacking with the other. Alternatively, you could restrain an opponent with one hand while punching with the free hand.
This game features some cool elements, including a variety of weapons. Players can equip Makoto with blades, hammers, and more, each offering unique abilities. You can also improve your preferred weapons through upgrades.
Here’s a quick update on what’s looking like a very large-scale game. RGG Studio promises to share more details shortly, before the game launches sometime during the winter on PS5.
