Apple TV has a new horror comedy series that’s quickly become one of its strongest offerings in the genre, rivaling the impact of M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant. Servant debuted on Apple TV back in 2019, when the platform was new, and while it didn’t gain massive popularity over its four seasons, it consistently received praise from both viewers and critics.
Apple TV+ hasn’t focused heavily on horror since the series Servant. It’s been more recognized for its consistently improving science fiction shows. But now, after several years, it seems Apple TV+ is starting to prioritize horror content again.
I’ve been really getting into Widow’s Bay on Apple TV+, and honestly, it’s fantastic! It’s one of those shows that just keeps building – each of the first three episodes has been better than the last. It’s easily the best horror series Apple TV+ has put out since Servant, and with a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, critics seem to agree!
Widow’s Bay Is Apple TV’s Best Horror Outing Since M. Night Shyamalan’s The Servant
As a critic, I have to say Apple TV+’s Servant really got under my skin. The show creates this intensely claustrophobic atmosphere and dives deep into some truly unsettling themes – grief, faith, and that feeling when things just aren’t quite right. While M. Night Shyamalan didn’t direct every episode, his signature style of suspenseful horror is definitely woven throughout the series. You can feel his influence in the way the story unfolds and the tension builds.
Similar to many of his other scary shows, Servant uses a lot of strange humor, and can even be surprisingly funny during its darkest scenes. Apple TV+’s new series, Widow’s Bay, strikes a similar balance between comedy and horror. However, in terms of its overall story and themes, Widow’s Bay is quite different from Servant.
A new Apple TV show is set in a financially troubled small town. The town’s mayor tries to boost tourism by downplaying the local supernatural legends, hoping they won’t scare visitors away. But as he tries to debunk these stories, he begins to encounter the terrifying reality behind them.
The main draw of Widow’s Bay is its intriguing, slow-burn storytelling. Each episode introduces a new supernatural element, but the show keeps you guessing about what’s really going on. What sets it apart from other horror shows, though, is its skillful blend of scares and humor.
I have to say, watching Widow’s Bay is such a wild ride! I found myself genuinely laughing one minute and then completely on edge the next. What’s amazing is how the show doesn’t keep the horror and comedy separate – it blends them together so well. Even when something is hilarious, there’s this undercurrent of unease that just sticks with you. It’s a really unique and unsettling experience, and I loved it!
Widow’s Bay Deserves To Last As Long As The Servant (If Not Longer)
Even after only three episodes, it’s clear that Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay has a lot of promise. The show relies heavily on quirky and ridiculous humor, so it won’t appeal to all horror fans. Despite a fantastic 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it hasn’t quite broken into the mainstream yet.
As a big TV fan, it’s honestly scary these days – so many great shows get axed no matter how good they are! That’s why I was a little worried about Widow’s Bay. It feels like a show that could easily be a one-season wonder. But, Apple TV has surprised me before, giving some really promising shows the space they need to find their audience and develop. So, I’m still hopeful that Widow’s Bay could really become one of their long-term hits.
Let’s hope Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay has a long run like M. Night Shyamalan’s Servant. The show’s initial episodes suggest it has the potential to build a complex and captivating story, potentially becoming as popular and impactful as series like Lost and From.
