New Tron: Ares Footage Reveals Thrilling Lightcycle Sequence & More at Comic-Con

About 14 years following the debut of “Tron: Legacy” and more than 4 decades after the original film, Disney is hoping that “Tron: Ares” will reignite the excitement as the franchise aims to break free from its grid. Last Friday, Disney presented a panel for the upcoming “Tron” sequel at San Diego Comic-Con, where they showed two thrilling previews to attendees at the film’s Hall H panel. The panel included actors such as Jared Leto, Jeff Bridges, and Cameron Monaghan, creating an atmosphere that made viewers feel like they were right in the movie, set within the legendary Grid world depicted in the “Tron” films, by using sounds and lights to immerse them into the experience.

To highlight, they also revealed never-before-seen snippets from the upcoming film, “Tron: Ares.” The initial teaser for this movie was debuted in April, while the full-length trailer surfaced on July 17th. With its theater release scheduled towards the end of this year, it’s evident that Walt Disney Pictures is aiming to drum up anticipation for the long-awaited sequel prior to its premiere. Given that the original “Tron” was a significant movie in 1982, but “Tron: Legacy” was considered a moderate success for Disney, resulting in a delay for another installment, it’s hoped that these San Diego Comic-Con clips will spark enthusiasm among fans. In other words, the new footage should ideally reignite excitement for this cherished franchise.

New Tron: Ares Footage Brings Ares and Athena into Our World

The initial segment displayed during the discussion introduced Evan Peters’ character, a relative of Edward Dillinger/Sark from the first Tron film, played by David Warner. In this scene, he employs technology reverse engineered from the original movie to transport Ares (Jared Leto) and Athena (Jodie Turner-Smith) from their digital world into ours. They arrive equipped with their lightcycles, on a mission to track down Eve Kim (Greta Lee), a talented programmer who possesses a crucial code that Peters’ character, Julian Dillinger, desires.

With two individuals hot on her tail, Kim decides to ride her motorcycle solo through the city, while Ares scrutinizes public surveillance cameras to find her. Eventually, he locates her standing on a bridge. Recognizing she’s being chased, Kim seeks help from a police officer, causing Ares to switch on his lightcycle’s trail and divide the car in half. As Ares advances towards her, Kim swiftly maneuvers and jumps off the bridge, landing back on the street, creating distance between them as a bus passes by. This action triggers Leto’s Ares to perform the well-known “Akira slide.

In a different scenario, Ares departs, while Athena persists in chasing Kim into a parking area. Kim stays put until a lightcycle ascends a ramp, causing her to drive her motorbike over an edge, effectively knocking Athena off hers and onto the ground below. Kim peers down to see if Athena’s okay, then notices the abandoned lightcycle. As she tinkers with it, however, Athena recovers and starts pursuing Kim on foot. Eventually, Kim manages to start the lightcycle, speeding away and leaving Athena behind in a cloud of dust.

Second Tron: Ares SDCC Clip Features Eve Kim and Ares Working Together

In the second segment displayed during the discussion, the action occurred within the grid. This part featured Greta Lee’s character Eve Kim struggling underwater, with Jared Leto’s character Ares diving in to rescue her. Surprisingly, instead of a lightcycle, Ares utilizes a lightjetski in this particular scene. As they attempted to flee, Athena deployed drones, which eventually chased after them. This situation led Kim to discover that Ares had defied an order to recover the code from her disc and delete her – a command given by Dillinger.

While the drones relentlessly chase them, Ares proposes sending her back to reality if she can find and return the code. Meanwhile, the drones persist in their pursuit. As the drones draw nearer, the jetski transforms into a submarine. It swiftly outmaneuvers the drones, allowing the motorcycle to ascend through the water and then break free into the sky, annihilating the drones and transporting both Kim and Ares back to reality, leaving the Grid behind.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share my perspective on the upcoming film, “Tron: Ares”, directed by Joachim Rønning and written by Jesse Wigutow, who crafted the story with David DiGilio. This cinematic spectacle boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring the likes of Leto, Peters, Bridges, Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Cameron Monaghan, and Hasan Minhaj. Mark your calendars for October 10, 2025, as “Tron: Ares” is set to light up the silver screen!

Those eager to revisit the Grid can do so by streaming both Tron and Tron: Legacy now on Disney+.
