Scrubs Revival’s Best Janitor Theory Sets Up His Perfect Season 2 Return After Ending Twists

Fans had to wait until the final episode, but the beloved Janitor (Neil Flynn) finally returned in Season 1 of the Scrubs revival on ABC and Hulu. He immediately resumed playfully tormenting J.D. (Zach Braff), who is now Chief of Medicine following Dr. Cox’s (John C. McGinley) retirement. J.D.’s new position didn’t protect him from the Janitor’s antics, and with Season 2 confirmed, that’s likely to continue!

While it hasn’t been officially announced, the show’s creators would like to have Neil Flynn back for the second season, even if it’s just for one episode. Showrunner Aseem Batra has expressed a desire to see more of him. This time around, Flynn’s character won’t be a simple janitor; he’s now the Chief Custodian for the Joint Commission, meaning he inspects hospitals. This new role could create interesting storylines in the upcoming season, and there may be further surprises in store.

Was The Janitor Lying To J.D. In The Scrubs Revival’s Season 1 Finale?

The idea that the Janitor works for the Joint Commission is amusing because it would give him power over J.D., but there’s not much proof it’s true. It’s based solely on the Janitor’s claim and a phone call J.D. made, both of which could be easily manipulated. The Janitor is known to lie, and he likely had the opportunity to switch numbers on J.D.’s phone. This explanation actually fits better than the idea that he was promoted to the made-up position of Chief Custodian, especially considering his odd obsession with a toaster.

The show’s ending also revealed a surprising connection between the Janitor and the Maintenance Guy (Darcy Michael), suggesting they are father and son. However, this relies solely on the Janitor’s statement, and the two characters don’t share a physical resemblance, leaving room for doubt. Writer Shota Batra has even suggested this could be a deliberate deception, as he told Deadline:

We’re not sure if that man is actually his son, because he’s known for not telling the truth. He consistently disrupts J.D.’s calm plans, so we’re definitely hoping to see some tension between them.

I strongly believe he’s being dishonest about both claims, and honestly, that would be the best thing for Season 2 of Scrubs. It would allow the Janitor and the Maintenance Guy to keep messing with J.D. all season long – just like they always do. With the Maintenance Guy appearing more often when Flynn isn’t around, we’d get to see J.D. struggle to adapt, only to find out the whole thing was a prank. It feels exactly like something the Janitor would pull, and it would set up a great direction for his character in the future.

Scrubs will return for Season 2. Season 1 is available to stream on Hulu.
