Mortal Kombat II Rotten Tomatoes Score Sets a Franchise Record (And Is Good News for the Third Movie)

The first Mortal Kombat movie came out in 1995, and now, after one sequel and a reboot, the new Mortal Kombat II is finally in theaters. The sequel already looked promising with the addition of popular characters and the return of some previously deceased ones, but now it has even better news: its Rotten Tomatoes score. The score is a franchise high and suggests the third movie could be very successful.

The new Mortal Kombat movie has received a 71% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 93 reviews. This is the best score any Mortal Kombat film has ever gotten from critics. Previous films haven’t done as well: the original Mortal Kombat earned 44%, Mortal Kombat Annihilation only 4%, and the 2021 reboot reached 55%. The new film is the first in the series to be considered ‘fresh’ by Rotten Tomatoes critics.

This Is A Great Sign For The Mortal Kombat Trilogy

Even though reactions to the new Mortal Kombat film are mixed, it’s a good sign for the upcoming third movie. People who liked it especially enjoyed that it’s more entertaining and geared towards longtime fans, and the action scenes – particularly the fight between Liu Kang and Kung Lao – are getting a lot of positive attention. Overall, the movie seems to deliver on exciting action.

Karl Urban is fantastic as Johnny Cage, and Adeline Rudolph delivers a great performance as Kitana. Fans will also be thrilled to see Josh Lawson back as Kano. While it’s uncertain if these characters will be in a third movie, having even one of them return would be a strong foundation for its success.

The sequel is a significant improvement over the first film, jumping from a 55% approval rating to 71%. This positive response suggests the movie will likely resonate with audiences and have staying power in theaters. More importantly, it establishes a strong base for future installments, leaving plenty of room for new stories and characters to be introduced.

The film’s success in theaters will also be a major factor, and we’ll have a good sense of how it’s doing shortly after its opening weekend. Mortal Kombat II is scheduled to release in theaters on May 8, 2026.
