New Shonen Jump Series Debuts to “Disastrous” Reception

Thanks to the popularity of long-running series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach, Weekly Shonen Jump has become the best-selling manga magazine ever. First published in 1968, the magazine has featured countless amazing manga series and short stories over the years. Despite changing trends, it remains incredibly successful today. Now, most series conclude after around 300 chapters, or are even cancelled sooner. Even popular hits like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen finished within five to six years and didn’t reach 300 chapters. Each year, the magazine introduces new series, which means that other manga have to end to make space.

Shueisha, the publisher, usually lets a manga run for about a year – around 40 to 60 chapters and a few collected volumes – before deciding if it’s successful. However, even promising series can be canceled after only 20 chapters if they don’t attract enough readers. A recent example is Gonron Egg, which will end on March 29, 2026, after just 21 chapters. Currently, another new Shonen Jump series, despite showing initial promise after launching in February, isn’t gaining enough popularity and may also be canceled.

Alien Headbutt Might Get Axed If The Sales Are Underwhelming

Akira Inui’s debut serialized manga, Alien Headbutt, began appearing on February 8th, 2026, after he’d previously created several short stories for Shonen Jump+. Although the manga has an intriguing story and strong artwork, it hasn’t been well-received since its release. While some international fans are hopeful for future installments, the reaction in Japan has been notably negative. A recent post by @ShonenSalto on X highlighted the contrast, noting that Kinato’s Magic, another manga released the same month, has been steadily gaining popularity.

Since it launched, Under Doctor has maintained a steady and growing fanbase. The manga started publishing in late January and has released 14 chapters so far. Its promotional videos, along with those for another series, quickly surpassed 100,000 views on YouTube within two weeks. However, Alien Headbutt’s videos have only reached 13,000 views – a considerable difference. Given this contrast in popularity, it’s possible Alien Headbutt may be cancelled.

I’m so excited about Alien Headbutt! It’s a really cool story about Shirokiba, a pro wrestler who comes home to his island only to find it’s been invaded by aliens! He has to use all his wrestling moves to fight them off, which sounds amazing. The first volume comes out on July 3rd, 2026, and honestly, how well it does will probably determine if the manga continues, so let’s all support it!
