Masters of the Universe: First Look at He-Man’s Power Sword Fixes a 40-Year-Old Problem

In the upcoming year, the iconic Masters of the Universe is set to grace our big screens once more, with no sneak peeks yet, but at San Diego Comic-Con, we got a close glimpse of two crucial aspects: He-Man’s Power Sword and Skeletor’s Havoc Staff. For those who visited the Castle Grayskull exhibit, they had an exclusive, in-person view of these artifacts, and while both were awe-inspiring, the Power Sword, in particular, hints at how the film is addressing a 40-year-old issue.

In a movie theater near you, He-Man and Skeletor last clashed on screen in 1987, in the Masters of the Universe film starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. Interestingly, though both the Power Sword and Havoc Staff were shown, only the Havoc Staff resembled the original weapon from the animated series, while the Power Sword did not.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’ve always been captivated by the distinctive design of the Power Sword from the cartoon. Its design is unique, with an elegant curve stretching upwards from the guard to the start of the blade, making it instantly recognizable. However, it was quite intriguing when the first live-action film drastically altered its design. While the new version still exuded a sense of coolness, it failed to capture the enchantment that the original held. For those interested, you can check out the 1987 version below.

In the upcoming live-action movie, the classic sword design from the animated series is making a comeback, while also maintaining the effective Havoc Staff design without needing adjustments. Both Skeletor’s weapon designs from the original live-action film and the latest one look fantastic, as shown in the images provided below.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the upcoming film, particularly its costumes. Although I haven’t had the chance to examine them personally yet, behind-the-scenes footage unveiled at Cinemacon earlier this year has left me optimistic. The consensus from those who have viewed this footage is that the costumes align perfectly with the weaponry, a testament to the original cartoon’s influence on the design elements.

However, it’s important to note that there will undoubtedly be some contemporary adjustments to these classic designs. Nonetheless, the authenticity that the film appears to strive for is intriguing, and I can hardly wait to witness these cherished characters reappearing on the big screen once more.

Nicholas Galitzine has been cast as He-Man in the Masters of the Universe film, and he shared a picture showing his He-Man appearance after the filming ended. Alongside the photo, he wrote that it was an honor to take on the role of Adam and He-Man, calling it the role of a lifetime. He put all his effort into it, but unfortunately, he can’t reveal much about the movie, but he is very proud of what they’ve created. He thanked the incredible cast and crew for their hard work.

Masters of the Universe is expected to hit theaters on June 5th, 2026.
