A special event celebrating Sir David Attenborough‘s 100th birthday was held at London’s Royal Albert Hall last night, May 8th. The celebration included a premiere of a new short film honoring his life and work.
The short film, titled ‘A Very Special Delivery’ and created by BBC Studios, begins with a surprise: King Charles III writing a birthday card for Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday.
In the video, the King fondly remembers his long friendship with David Attenborough. He recalls meeting Attenborough for the first time in 1958, when he was nine years old and visited the set of the BBC children’s show, Zoo Quest, with his sister, Princess Anne.
The King shared photos documenting their years of friendship and praised Sir David Attenborough’s talent for showing the world the beauty of nature in fresh and amazing ways.
He continued by saying that through your actions, you’ve shown you share his commitment to protecting our planet and ensuring a healthy future for all living things.
You can watch the video for yourself below.

The letter is dispatched by butler to a waiting Land Rover, but the delivery hits a snag when a fallen tree blocks the way. Determined to get the message through, a border collie named Flynn takes charge, grabbing the letter in his mouth and running with it, all while Take That’s “Greatest Day” plays in the background.
The story beautifully honors Attenborough with a heartwarming scene: the animals of the natural world work together to deliver a letter to him. Eagles, a hedgehog, a squirrel, geese, an otter, a swan, a duck, a fox, a deer, and a barn owl all play a part in finally getting the letter through his door.
A representative from Buckingham Palace stated that the King was very pleased to be included in the special film honoring a man dedicated to nature, and he had been following its production closely. He was disappointed, however, that he couldn’t meet the barn owl, Lily, featured in the film.
The Queen was delighted that her playful corgi, Moley, was asked to be in the scene. She even brought along plenty of dog treats to encourage him to perform well during filming.
The King and Queen send their best wishes to Sir David on the premiere of his film, and they hope he loves the finished product as much as they enjoyed working with him on it.
According to Jack Bootle, Head of Specialist Factual at the BBC, this special birthday tribute felt right for Sir David Attenborough, who has dedicated his life to protecting the natural world. The program, ‘A Very Special Delivery,’ is a warm and affectionate celebration of both Sir David’s 100th birthday and the shared passion for wildlife he has with King Charles.
