The Star Wars saga has evolved so much over the years that many of its original concepts and characters have been overshadowed. While Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader has arguably the most complex story of anyone in the series, all the added detail has come at a price. Focusing so heavily on his backstory and motivations has stripped away much of the mystery surrounding the character. While this depth has made Anakin a more compelling figure, it’s also limited the potential of what Darth Vader could be.
The recent Star Wars animated series, Maul – Shadow Lord, made Star Wars Day 2026 unforgettable. The show’s finale finally delivered the highly anticipated confrontation between Darth Maul and Darth Vader. But beyond just satisfying fans with this epic duel, the series also cleverly addressed a long-standing issue with how Darth Vader had been portrayed in Star Wars.
The Rise & Fall of Darth Vader

When Star Wars: A New Hope came out in 1977, Darth Vader quickly became a famous and frightening character. He immediately established himself as a villain by brutally punishing failures – even Force-choking his own officers – and mercilessly destroying anyone who opposed him. The destruction of the planet Alderaan and the killing of the hero Obi-Wan Kenobi were particularly shocking. Much like the villains in slasher films, Vader’s appearance alone created intense suspense and fear. Even the sound of his breathing became iconic and terrifying, scaring young viewers and becoming a recognizable symbol for fans.
When The Empire Strikes Back followed A New Hope, it dramatically changed how audiences viewed Darth Vader. The initial impression of him as a terrifying villain was replaced with a much more complex and layered story. The shocking revelation that Vader was actually Anakin Skywalker revolutionized Star Wars and even filmmaking itself. From that point on, Vader wasn’t just a scary monster; he became a tragic figure, like a character in a Shakespearean play, showing the downfall of a once-great man. By Return of the Jedi, Vader was a deeply conflicted character with a full backstory, leading to his ultimate redemption – his return to the light side, defeating his master Darth Sidious, and finally dying.
Star Wars Needs More Darth Vader Horror Moments
Darth Vader’s story in the first three Star Wars films paved the way for exploring Anakin Skywalker’s life in the prequel trilogy and shows like the Clone Wars. This allowed a new generation of fans to connect with Anakin as a distinct character, moving beyond the original image of Darth Vader as a cold, ruthless enforcer of Palpatine’s will.
Recent Star Wars stories like Rebels, Maul – Shadow Lord, and Obi-Wan Kenobi finally show Darth Vader as he was originally envisioned. Maul – Shadow Lord is a great example, portraying Vader soon after the events of Revenge of the Sith – about a year and a half later – as he struggles with his new identity. He’s largely silent and displays very little emotion, acting as a ruthless killing machine. He actively avoids anything that might remind him of the humanity he’s lost.
Other Star Wars stories from this period, like the animated series Rebels and the Marvel Star Wars and Darth Vader comics, have shown Vader in a similar light. The comics, especially, have struck a good balance, portraying him as stoic and unemotional at first, while hinting at the intense inner turmoil he experiences. These stories take us inside Anakin’s tormented mind and soul after his fall to the dark side, showing not just physical pain, but the deep emotional anguish he feels when reminded of his past. Many fans would like to see this depiction – of a monstrous, yet tormented Darth Vader – explored further in live-action or animation to deepen our understanding of the character.
Star Wars Creative Head Explains Darth Vader’s True Character

Dave Filoni, who leads creative efforts for Star Wars, is known for his work on animated series like Shadow Lord, Rebels, and The Clone Wars. Recently, at an event for Maul – Shadow Lord, Filoni – a protégé of Star Wars creator George Lucas – discussed Anakin/Vader’s mindset during his fight with Maul (Sam Witwer), Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki (Dennis Haysbert), and his apprentice, Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon).
According to Filoni, the core of Darth Vader’s character is that he’s completely separated himself from his past as Anakin Skywalker. He actively suppresses any connection to that former self, and anything that evokes memories of Anakin – like encountering a Jedi – triggers a destructive response. He destroys these reminders because they force him to confront the fact that he betrayed his friends and abandoned everything he once believed in and knew.
Filoni explained that Darth Vader’s biggest weakness isn’t physical, but a growing inner doubt that prevents him from recognizing the truth. Anakin’s turn to the dark side was ultimately pointless – he lost everything and was misled. He struggles to accept this reality, putting him even further from redemption than Maul.

For nearly three decades, Star Wars fans have argued about who was more powerful: Darth Vader or Darth Maul. The recent conclusion of Shadow Lord finally answered that question, and creator Dave Filoni has explained the reasoning behind the outcome.
Maul is having trouble overcoming his anger, while Anakin was completely overwhelmed by it. If Anakin had to truly confront his actions, it would be devastating. That’s essentially Darth Vader – Anakin is still in there, but Darth Vader won’t allow him to break free.
Filoni believes Darth Vader shouldn’t be portrayed as a complex character, but rather as an unstoppable, destructive force – something like a shark or a villain from a horror movie. He emphasizes that Vader is completely devoid of compassion and doesn’t even acknowledge his opponents as individuals. He simply focuses on eliminating anything that stands in his way, driven by remorse, anger, and hate. Filoni points to Vader’s appearance in Rogue One as a perfect example – he silently moves to destroy his enemies without a word, single-mindedly focused on his objective, and channels all his inner turmoil into his actions.
