Harry Potter’s Rumored Arthur Weasley Star Clarifies HBO Series Casting

Kevin McKidd, known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, has addressed rumors about whether he’ll be playing Arthur Weasley in the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series.

Speculation that Martin McKidd might play Arthur Weasley gained traction when Gracie Cochrane, who’s been cast as Ginny Weasley in the new HBO Harry Potter series, started following him on Instagram. McKidd recently finished his 18-year run on Grey’s Anatomy with the show’s season 22 finale.

McKidd addressed rumors about him potentially playing Arthur Weasley in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly. He admitted seeing the speculation and didn’t rule it out, saying he’s a big Harry Potter fan. He also revealed he was once offered a role in the final two Harry Potter films – a werewolf character – but had to decline due to a conflicting project.

McKidd recalls a time when his show, Journeyman, was in jeopardy of being cancelled. While under contract for the show, he received an offer from director David Yates to appear in the last two Harry Potter films. However, he had to decline because he was waiting to learn if Journeyman would be renewed. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled, and McKidd missed the opportunity to be in the Harry Potter films – a decision he still regrets.

Considering his previous involvement, McKidd expressed strong interest in reprising a role related to Arthur Weasley, saying he’d be “very excited” and “very happy” if recent rumors about being offered the part turned out to be true.

McKidd revealed he was once considered for the role of Fenrir Greyback, the werewolf character in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. He noted that switching from playing a villainous werewolf to the kind-hearted Arthur Weasley would have been a big change and a more substantial role for him.

Arthur Weasley is first introduced in Harry and the Chamber of Secrets and becomes a significant character throughout the Harry Potter series as a core member of the Weasley family and the Order of the Phoenix. Mark Williams portrayed him in all the Harry Potter films except for the very first one, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

HBO hasn’t announced who will play Arthur Weasley yet because the character doesn’t appear in the first season, which is based on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. However, the show has been renewed for a second season, and filming is expected to start this fall. This means we might find out who’s been cast as Arthur soon. The timing could work well for actor Alan McKidd, who is leaving Grey’s Anatomy, and this role could become his next major TV part.

As a huge Harry Potter fan, I’m so excited about the casting for the first season! Bonnie Wright isn’t returning as Ginny, but they’ve got a great actress, Alastair Stout, taking on the role of Ron. We’ll also see Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, and Tristan and Gabriel Harland as the mischievous Fred and George. Ruari Spooner is playing Percy, which I think is perfect. Beyond the Weasleys, Dominic McLaughlin will be Harry, and Arabella Stanton is Hermione – I’ve heard great things about her! And the supporting cast is incredible: John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Nick Frost as Hagrid, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, and Lox Pratt as Draco. It’s a really strong lineup!

HBO’s Harry Potter debuts on December 25.
