The Defenders’ Return in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 Officially Addressed by Marvel: “The World This Is All Heading Towards”

The Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again isn’t just focusing on Daredevil. Season 2 introduced other heroes, like Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, hinting at a larger team-up. Recent photos from Season 3 suggest Marvel is officially reuniting the Defenders – the group of heroes who first appeared in their own Netflix shows nearly a decade ago. According to showrunner Dario Scardapane, this is a deliberate move to broaden the scope of the Daredevil series on Disney+.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly after the Season 2 finale, Scardapane discussed bringing in characters from other Marvel shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist – collectively known as the Defenders. He explained that Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again is expanding the scope to show more of New York City, beyond just the area around Avengers Tower, but still within the same universe. He also mentioned the upcoming Punisher series as being part of this larger connected world, suggesting that the show is gradually revealing a previously established, but unseen, corner of the Marvel universe.

He explained that the gritty, street-level heroes and villains introduced in Netflix’s Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Defenders, and Punisher series are where the story is ultimately going. He believes this is the creative direction they’re taking, and bringing in new characters feels like a natural expansion of that world.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 Will Be a Defenders Reunion

As a lifelong Marvel fan, I’m incredibly excited about the potential Defenders reunion! It’s hitting at a really interesting moment for the MCU. Honestly, the Multiverse Saga felt a little all over the place, and it sounds like Kevin Feige is responding to that. He’s planning to slow things down – fewer movies and shows each year – which makes a lot of sense given how much content we’ve been getting lately. It seems like Marvel is smartly using the Daredevil: Born Again series as a way to reintroduce these beloved street-level heroes and bring them back together, since they’re being more selective about what projects get the green light.

It remains to be seen if Marvel can deliver a story that truly satisfies fans. While Jessica Jones’ return was eagerly awaited, some felt it ended up being a disappointing nod to nostalgia. With the spotlight understandably on Daredevil’s story involving Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, Jessica didn’t have much to do in her limited scenes. Now, the writers and producers need to find meaningful roles for the other ‘Defenders’ characters. If they plan to continue building this shared universe set in New York City, they likely have some interesting ideas for how to do that.

It’s going to be challenging to balance everything in the new season. While the show is still fundamentally Daredevil: Born Again, with Wilson Fisk already confirmed to return, the focus should remain on Daredevil and his ongoing story. Giving the other Defenders significant roles is important, but not at the cost of their development – fans have waited a long time and deserve satisfying storylines for all the characters. However, shifting the focus too much away from Daredevil would also be a mistake; Matt Murdock is a strong lead who can easily carry the show on his own.

As a huge Marvel fan, I always thought the way Netflix handled the Defenders was brilliant – giving each character their own show to really flesh them out before bringing them together as a team. But now, with Marvel seemingly hitting pause and Disney+ maybe not being as keen on full series (especially with talk about streaming being a tough market right now), I don’t see that happening again anytime soon. I think a smart move would be to use the ‘Special Presentation’ label they’ve already established. Imagine a one-off special for Jessica Jones or Luke Cage, kind of like that Punisher: One Last Kill special! It wouldn’t be a whole season, sure, but it’d be a fantastic way to give those Defenders some much-deserved screen time without having to fight for space in a bigger project.
