Even though we’re only partway through the year, 2026 is looking like a huge year for big movies. We’ve already seen some major successes, like The Super Mario Bros. Movie which is close to earning $900 million worldwide, and films such as Project Hail Mary and the latest Scream movie have also done well. However, not every film has been a hit – one highly anticipated sequel to a disaster movie didn’t perform well in theaters and is now available to stream on HBO Max.
Gerard Butler returned for Greenland 2: Migration, which premiered on HBO Max on May 8th after a disappointing run in theaters just four months prior. While the original Greenland (2020) was a success, the sequel earned only around $45 million despite costing $90 million to make. The film picks up five years after the comet impact from the first movie, following the Garrity family as they leave their shelter and journey across a devastated Europe, searching for a safe zone in France.
Greenland 2: Migration Is a Flawed Post-Apocalyptic Journey Worth Watching
Critics weren’t impressed with Greenland 2, giving it a 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a significant decrease from the original’s 78% ‘Certified Fresh’ score. They found the sequel to be fairly average, with a repetitive plot and characters who seemed too lucky. However, audiences enjoyed it more, giving it a 66% rating, which is actually higher than the first movie’s 63%. While Greenland 2 doesn’t quite reach the standard of the original, it’s still a fun and enjoyable action movie, especially for fans of the first film.
Unlike the first Greenland film, which was a disaster thriller, Greenland 2 focuses on the family’s long-term struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic Europe. This creates a similar atmosphere to the movie The Road, though it’s not quite as grim. While the film explores deeper emotional themes of family and strength, it still delivers plenty of thrilling action, like a dangerous river crossing and a suspenseful scene on a collapsing bridge. Gerard Butler and Morena Baccarin again give strong performances as determined parents protecting their family in a frozen, devastated world.
What’s New on HBO Max?
As a movie fan, I’m always checking what’s new on streaming, and HBO Max is really delivering this May! They just added Greenland 2: Migration, and it’s one of many films hitting the service this month. I’m excited to see they’ve also got classics like A Good Day to Die Hard alongside newer hits like Saltburn and Crazy Rich Asians. They’re even adding some titles later in May that I’ve been meaning to check out – Lurker on the 15th, Tomb Raider on the 24th, and Rampage on the 26th. Plus, they’ve got the 2026 version of Wuthering Heights available now, which is interesting!
