Square Enix Confirms New Game in 40-Year-Old RPG Series Is Being Announced This Month

Square Enix is planning to announce a new game in the long-running Dragon Quest RPG series this month, marking 40 years since the original game debuted in 1986. While Final Fantasy is often the first RPG that comes to mind when people think of Square Enix, Dragon Quest is another beloved classic. In fact, a new main installment, Dragon Quest 12, is already in development, and Square Enix will also reveal a second Dragon Quest game later this month.

As a huge Dragon Quest fan, I’m so excited about the announcement of another game! Right now, we don’t know much about it, but it sounds like it won’t be a full-on new numbered entry – they’re already working on that! It could be anything, honestly – maybe something totally fresh, or another installment in a series like Dragon Quest Builders or Dragon Quest Heroes. A remake or remaster would be awesome too! We’re all just waiting for more details. Luckily, Yuji Horii, the creator of Dragon Quest, accidentally revealed that something was coming, so at least we know it’s real!

Circle May 27 in the Calendar

Yuji Horii recently announced on a now-deleted podcast that a new Dragon Quest game will be unveiled during a livestream on May 27th. The stream will also feature announcements beyond just the new game, though details are limited. It’s currently unknown whether this livestream will focus solely on Dragon Quest, be part of a larger Square Enix presentation, or something different altogether.

There’s no reason to doubt what Horii is saying, and he seems to have accurate information. However, remember that these are still just plans, not official announcements, so things could change before they’re finalized.

Square Enix hasn’t officially responded to this recent leak, and it’s unlikely they will. However, we’ll update this article if they do.
