Huge TV Star Responds to Harry Potter Reboot Casting Rumors, 17 Years After Missing Out on the Movies

The upcoming Harry Potter series on HBO still has many actors to cast as it adapts J.K. Rowling’s books for television. The original movies featured a remarkably talented British cast – including stars like Alan Rickman, Gary Oldman, and Maggie Smith – so the new series has a high standard to meet. So far, the casting choices have been strong, with John Lithgow playing Albus Dumbledore and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Fans have been suggesting actors for the upcoming HBO remake of Harry Potter, and one actor who was previously considered for the films recently addressed the online buzz. Kevin McKidd, known for his role in Grey’s Anatomy, told Entertainment Weekly he’s aware of the fan castings and wouldn’t rule out being involved, saying he’s a big Harry Potter fan and open to the possibility.

Who Could Kevin McKidd Play in Harry Potter on HBO?

As a long-time fan, I was really sad to see Kevin McKidd and Kim Raver leave Grey’s Anatomy in the Season 22 finale! Kevin, who plays Owen Hunt, has been a part of the show since Season 5 – that’s 17 seasons! It was a sweet exit, with Owen deciding to move to Paris to support Teddy and her new job. While I’ll miss him so much, I’m also excited for Kevin to explore new roles and opportunities. It felt like a fitting goodbye for his character and I hope it opens doors for him!

It was a significant missed opportunity for McKidd, as he was offered a role in both parts of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (2010 and 2011) by director David Yates. Unfortunately, he was already committed to the TV show Journeyman at the time and contractually couldn’t accept other work until its fate was decided. He had to decline the Harry Potter offer, and it was particularly frustrating because Journeyman was subsequently cancelled anyway.

McKidd recently shared that he’s still disappointed about not being in the final two Harry Potter movies. He was previously considered for a role – rumored to be Fenrir Greyback, the werewolf Death Eater – and is thrilled at the possibility of revisiting that opportunity. He expressed his hope that the rumors become a reality, as he’d be delighted to join the cast now.

Talk about potential casting choices for the upcoming series started when Gracie Cochrane, who will play Ginny Weasley, began following actor Alan McKidd on Instagram. This has led fans to speculate that McKidd might be cast as Arthur Weasley, Ginny and Ron’s father, even though his character doesn’t appear until the second book. Katherine Parkinson has already been confirmed to play Molly Weasley, Arthur’s wife.
