Steam’s Most Popular Horror Game of 2025 Is Back at the Top of the Charts Thanks to a Major Update

While many gamers still enjoy playing games alone, the most popular games on Steam are often those best played with friends – and that’s true for all kinds of games, from relaxing to scary. R.E.P.O., a cooperative horror game, has been a consistent hit since its release in February 2025, once reaching a peak of over 271,500 players. Like most games, its popularity dipped a bit after the initial excitement, but a recent major update to the game’s Early Access version is bringing players back.

The developers of the game R.E.P.O., Semiwork, are known for their entertaining and humorous approach, even when dealing with the horror elements of the game. They regularly share updates with their community through developer vlogs, which are enjoyable to watch on their own. Recently, they announced a major update called ‘The Cosmetics Update’ on May 7th. Since then, the game has seen a huge increase in popularity, with daily players jumping from around 35,000 to over 96,900. It’s clear fans were excited to return to this popular co-op game!

R.E.P.O. Delivers New Looks & Features in Latest Major Update

Since its February 2025 launch in Early Access, R.E.P.O. has received consistently positive reviews. The game allows up to six players to team up and use physics-based mechanics to find and collect various objects. Its features, including proximity chat, a humorous tone, and a cartoonish horror style, made it a standout new horror game on Steam in 2025. A recent major update has brought renewed attention to R.E.P.O., with players rediscovering its enjoyable gameplay.

The latest major update for R.E.P.O., known as The Cosmetics Update, offers much more than just new looks, though there’s plenty of customization available! Semiwork added over 500 cosmetic items so players can personalize their semibots. The update also revamped the in-game shop and introduced a new shopkeeper. Beyond cosmetics, players can now find new items like a Leaf Blower and Roll Staff. You can see some of these additions in action in Semiwork’s recent developer video.

This latest update for R.E.P.O. includes visual improvements and changes to the in-game shop, along with several new features and enhancements. Players will now see their own shadows, and the sound when healing others will be more subtle. Many items now have new ways to interact with, and the user interface has been refined. As with any major update, numerous bugs have been fixed and gameplay balance has been adjusted – including issues with enemies and weapons. You can find a complete list of changes in the full R.E.P.O. patch notes on Steam.

R.E.P.O. is available now on PC through Steam as an Early Access game. It usually costs $9.99, but is currently 30% off until May 11th to mark the launch of a new update. While there’s no firm release date yet, the developers at Semiwork expect the game to be in Early Access for about a year and a half.
