Finding a fresh television series to become attached to is simply unbeatable, but it can be disappointing when these shows fail to deliver a satisfying conclusion. Sometimes, they build emotional investment in the story only to provide an ending that spoils the entire series. Thankfully, this doesn’t occur frequently (thank goodness), but there have been some instances in television history that fans still haven’t recovered from. The truth is that a TV finale holds significant weight and pressure because it marks the end, making it always carry high emotional impact, regardless of the show’s typical mood. As viewers, we often have lofty expectations for our favorites, which can sometimes set us up for disappointment.
The shows we’re going to discuss didn’t just have disappointing endings; they had unexpected plot twists that left fans feeling frustrated and considering abandoning the fandom altogether, although perhaps not quite to that extreme. While not every finale was as bad as it seemed initially, some of them definitely elicited intense responses from viewers regarding the episodes listed below.
10) How I Met Your Mother – She Was Dead the Whole Time
For nine seasons, the TV show titled “How I Met Your Mother” maintained a mystery surrounding Ted Mosby’s future spouse. Throughout these seasons, viewers devised various theories about the potential identity of the “mother.” However, the final season was marked by several controversial plot twists. One such twist was the deterioration of Robin and Barney’s marriage. The most disheartening revelation, however, was that Ted’s wife, Tracy McConnell, had been deceased throughout the series.
Reflecting on it now, it seems almost plausible. Almost. After all, why would Ted recount such a lengthy narrative to his children if their mother was present? Yet, this twist shattered the entire potential the series had promised. In truth, it violated multiple promises. The audience was just beginning to understand Tracy (portrayed by Cristin Milioti), only for the show to end her life, prompting Ted to chase after Robin again. Unsurprisingly, the reaction to the finale was quite severe, and many viewers have yet to recover from it.
9) Pretty Little Liars – The Secret Twin Twist
Many viewers found the ending of “Pretty Little Liars” disappointing, as A.D., the long-time series antagonist, turned out to be a secret twin. After years of fan theories about who could be behind the mystery, this twist was quite unexpected and left many fans feeling let down.
The unexpected double identity revelation seemed rather unrefined, and it prevented viewers from ever correctly guessing A.D.’s true identity. Consequently, this missing clue made solving the mystery an impossible task, even for the most astute detective fans, since they were denied a crucial detail.
8) Dexter – Running Off to Become a Lumberjack
Back then, the ending of Dexter was truly painful to watch, but now that Dexter: Resurrection is out and running, it seems less agonizing. However, at the time, it was widely criticized as one of the worst finale seasons ever, largely due to the unusual choice of having the main character inexplicably escape and take up lumberjacking in Oregon instead.
It’s clear that the act of running away (and feigning death) can be justified considering the latest events. However, this action contradicts a large portion of his character growth until now. We mustn’t forget that such an ending would have undone eight seasons worth of relationships and storylines. Fortunately, Dexter: New Blood and Dexter: Resurrection work to rectify this issue.
7) Veronica Mars – Logan Gets Thrown Away
Viewers of “Veronica Mars” eagerly followed the intricate relationship between Veronica and Logan over a long period. While it’s common for shows to prolong the “will they, won’t they” tension, fans never imagined the tragic twists that “Veronica Mars” ultimately took.
In summary, the last season of Veronica Mars was a strong comeback to its original quality, rekindling viewers’ affection for the series. Regrettably, it faltered in one crucial aspect. It provided fans with an outstanding romantic victory by allowing Veronica and Logan to wed. Yet, almost instantaneously after that, Logan is killed by a car bomb. This swiftly undid years of romance development and character crafting.
6) Lost – Losing the Threads
Among all shows on this compilation, it’s widely known that the ending of Lost was particularly unsatisfying. With its intricate and puzzling mythology, the series generated numerous enigmas, leading fans to anticipate a wealth of answers in the finale. Regrettably, those expectations were not met. The series finale of Lost deliberately left many essential aspects unresolved.
Instead of opting for a climactic resolution tied to the island’s enigmas in the finale of Lost, they chose a more character-focused ending, which felt fitting as a farewell, allowing fans to bid adieu to characters they had grown attached to over six seasons. However, this conclusion might have been more satisfying if the penultimate episode had provided some answers regarding the island or its puzzling mysteries.
5) Supernatural – Dean’s Death
Without a doubt, the finale of “Supernatural” didn’t entirely “spoil” the series for viewers, but it was quite unexpected and left many feeling disappointed. The Winchester brothers, Sam and Dean, had faced countless trials and tribulations over the years. However, we weren’t prepared for such an abrupt and seemingly permanent conclusion to what appeared to be just another routine hunt.
In the final episode of “Supernatural,” Sam and Dean embarked on a typical vampire hunt, nothing out of the ordinary for them. Yet surprisingly, despite its seemingly low risk, Dean met his demise. It was startling to see things take a turn for the worse so abruptly, given all they had experienced. Statistically speaking, it’s understandable that not everyone would make it to the end. However, it felt unfair to subject fans to such an unexpected twist in the storyline.
4) Gossip Girl – The Secret Blogger Reveal
Viewers approached the final episode of Gossip Girl with many unanswered questions, yet the response was far from enthusiastic when they learned that Dan Humphrey was the mystery blogger all along. This revelation seemed more like a convenient escape than a satisfying conclusion, and it fails to align with our expectations and understanding of the characters.
The disclosure uncovered several plot inconsistencies. We might be able to overlook how it contradicted Dan’s responses to rumors (perhaps he’s just an excellent actor?), but other aspects are hard to reconcile. Moreover, the notion that Dan is the gossip blogger feels like a breach of trust, not only for the characters, but also for the viewers who have grown attached to the story over time.
3) St. Elsewhere – “It Was All a Dream”
Instead of “it was all a dream” episodes being the worst thing ever, it turns out that St. Elsewhere took things to another level by using this concept as their series finale! The final episode suggested that the entire six-season storyline was just one child’s imagination. Amazing, right?
St. Elsewhere, a pioneering series in the medical drama genre (such as ER and Grey’s Anatomy), was widely recognized for setting new standards. However, its conclusion, which seemed to contradict all the efforts put into the show, left many viewers disappointed. To add insult to injury, the final scene featuring a snow globe with the hospital inside served as a rather bitter twist.
2) Once Upon a Time – The Final Season is Really a Soft Reboot
Initially, “Once Upon a Time” aired for an impressive span of seven seasons. Yet, its final season presents some unusual aspects that can’t be ignored. In essence, the seventh season functions more like a fresh start or reimagining, as many of the original cast members were noticeably absent.
Just like “Once Upon a Time,” other shows have experimented with introducing a new cast. One example is Scrubs during its final season, which also underwent similar changes, and we all remember how that ended up. The final season of “Once Upon a Time” has been met with mixed reactions; some fans appreciated the fresh perspective, while others were disheartened by the departure of characters they had grown attached to over time.
1) Game of Thrones – Daenerys’ Descent Into Madness
Leaving out a list of unsatisfying conclusions without mentioning “Game of Thrones” would be like skipping a major topic in a discussion among fans. The final season has sparked much debate due to the fact that many viewers felt let down by the way events unfolded. While there’s plenty more to discuss, for now, let’s zero in on Daenerys Targaryen and her slide into madness. This is a significant aspect worth exploring.
The TV series “Game of Thrones” skillfully crafted her character over multiple seasons, presenting her as both relatable and heroic, yet with flaws that made her feel real. This was intended to create a hero whom fans could trust, especially amidst the widespread misery and turmoil in Westeros. Although “Game of Thrones” is known for subverting audience expectations, transforming Daenerys into a ruthless antagonist might have been an unexpected twist too extreme.
