A lot of hype surrounded Avengers: Infinity War because it was the epic conclusion to a decade-long storyline – the Infinity Saga – and was expected to be a landmark film. Unlike some movies, like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Infinity War delivered on what its trailers showed; most of the scenes and moments featured in the marketing actually made it into the final movie.
The movie featured a huge cast and a complex story, culminating in an epic battle with a shocking outcome—many viewers didn’t expect the heroes to suffer such a devastating defeat. However, not all the storylines hinted at in previous films made it into the final cut. Specifically, a key element teased in Infinity War was left out, and there’s a clear reason why that decision was made, which many fans will find disappointing.
Smart Hulk Was Supposed To Be In Infinity War

The version of Hulk we see in Endgame – Smart Hulk – was initially planned to appear in Infinity War. After Thor: Ragnarok showed Bruce Banner and Hulk clashing, Hulk was unwilling to transform, forcing Banner to fight mostly as a human inside the Hulkbuster armor. While Banner performed well in that role, it would have been more effective to have Hulk fighting alongside the Avengers against Thanos.
The trailers and merchandise for Infinity War hinted that Hulk would appear in Wakanda and emerge from the Hulkbuster armor, leading fans to believe he’d join the battle. This was actually the initial plan, but a major problem ultimately led filmmakers to abandon the idea.
Test Audiences Hated Smart Hulk

According to the director’s commentary for Endgame, the initial idea was for Bruce Banner and the Hulk to resolve their conflict and become ‘Smart Hulk’ during Infinity War. They were supposed to emerge together after Banner broke out of the Hulkbuster armor and defeat Cull Obsidian – a potentially amazing scene. However, test audiences didn’t respond well to the Smart Hulk character, so the plan was scrapped and moved to Endgame instead.
Viewers felt the change in direction happened too fast and didn’t quite work. It also didn’t mesh well with the overall tone of Infinity War, which is especially dark in its second half. While there are brief moments of hope, like Wanda’s fight in Wakanda and Thor’s entrance, the movie mostly focuses on one loss after another.
These scenes were removed due to these issues, and fans didn’t get to see Smart Hulk until Endgame – though even then, some weren’t thrilled with the character.
Could We See More Of Smart Hulk In The Endgame Rerelease?

Even though it’s already been confirmed that Hulk didn’t participate in the battle in Wakanda during Infinity War, we might still see more of the Smart Hulk persona soon. However, while Hulk is set to appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day in the near future, he won’t be the Smart Hulk version. Plus, Bruce Banner/Hulk isn’t currently listed as returning in Avengers: Doomsday, which suggests Smart Hulk’s time in the MCU might be coming to an end.
I’m so excited that Marvel is bringing Endgame back to theaters! They’re promising some brand new scenes before the big Doomsday event, and I’m really hoping they show us more of Smart Hulk. Honestly, while I love the character, his story has been a little rocky so far, so I’m cautiously optimistic about what they’ll add. It could go either way, but I’m definitely curious to see what they’ve kept under wraps!
