In the rich tapestry of Star Trek, there are numerous unforgettable antagonists. The Borg Queen, Data’s sibling Lore, and Gul Dukat stand out as particularly memorable; the latter being exceptionally repugnant. However, none have been more amusing than John de Lancie’s character Q. What these characters share is that even after they seem to be vanquished – with Dukat meeting his end – the most captivating villains always reappear in Star Trek. Among the pantheon of Star Trek villains, and indeed one of the greatest sci-fi antagonists, is set to return for a new series in 2025, following its first trailer release.
After nearly a decade, the original vision for a 3-episode miniseries centered on Khan is finally being realized, thanks to the upcoming audio series titled Star Trek: Khan. Scheduled for release later this year, this series will see Lost actor Naveen Andrews portraying Khan, with Wrenn Schmidt taking on the role of Enterprise historian and Khan’s wife in exile, Marla McGivers – a character originally played by Madlyn Rhue in The Original Series. A new trailer for the series has been released following the Star Trek panel at Comic-Con, along with additional cast announcements. Check out the trailer here:
In the third season of “Reacher,” Sonya Cassidy joins the cast, portraying Starfleet doctor Rosalind Lear. She delves into Khan’s past, which is spent in exile on Ceti Alpha V. Notably, the upcoming “Star Trek: Khan” production will welcome back two legendary actors to the franchise. First, Captain Hikaru Sulu, played by George Takei, makes his return. He serves as Lear’s commanding officer aboard the USS Excelsior, having been seen in both “Star Trek: Very Short Treks” and “Lower Decks” recently. Joining him is Tuvok, portrayed by Tim Russ, who at this point in the timeline holds the rank of ensign and serves as the junior science officer on the USS Excelsior. Russ last reprised his role for “Star Trek: Picard.
The upcoming series titled Star Trek: Khan, set to debut on September 8, 2025 across popular podcast streaming platforms, is poised to bridge the gap in Khan’s history between his initial Star Trek appearances and the two decades he spent in exile. Initially proposed back in 2017 but later shelved due to the high cost of producing a three-episode miniseries, it has now been reimagined as part of Alex Kurtzman’s strategy to extend the franchise through serial podcasts in 2022.
According to official announcements, this series will delve into the transformation of Khan from a “benevolent tyrant and superhuman visionary” to the vengeful antagonist seen in The Wrath of Khan. Although it’s not a new TV show, it offers an engaging experience for fans eager to celebrate Star Trek as it approaches its 60th anniversary.
