Fans of Regular Show have been waiting a long time, and now the spin-off, Regular Show: The Lost Tapes, is finally here on Cartoon Network! While the new series revisits old adventures with Mordecai and Rigby, it’s more than just a spin-off – it’s actually a sequel. The Lost Tapes continues the story after the original series finale, and even brings back characters who didn’t survive the original show by revisiting events from the final episode.
Please be aware that the following contains spoilers for the first episode of Regular Show: The Lost Tapes. To recap, the original Regular Show ended with Pops making the ultimate sacrifice to defeat his brother, Anti-Pops. The Lost Tapes begins with Pops in heaven, where he reveals that Anti-Pops has reformed. The episode opens with Pops enjoying his afterlife, doing all the things he loved when he was alive. We see not only Pops, Anti-Pops, and their father, Mr. Maellard, but also many other characters from the show who have passed away. This surprising start suggests Regular Show: The Lost Tapes has plenty of unexpected twists in store, and you can watch the beginning below.
Regular Show: Past & Present

The episode explains Pops’ unique storytelling method: we see him in heaven accidentally destroying the tape he uses to watch over his life. Rewatching Mordecai and Rigby’s funny adventures has become his main afterlife activity, so losing the tape deeply upsets him. After no one can replace or repair it, Pops embarks on a crazy journey with a deceased frisbee golf enthusiast, ultimately finding a collection of tapes that seem to be the missing episodes of Regular Show.
I’ve been thinking about how Cartoon Network could bring back The Lost Tapes, and the recent Beavis and Butt-Head revival gave me an idea. That show cleverly showed us Beavis and Butt-Head as they are now, but also gave glimpses of them as adults. I think The Lost Tapes could do something similar – show us what Pops and the rest of the Regular Show crew are up to in the present, but also jump ahead to see their futures. It would be a great way to expand the story, and with Cartoon Network already planning over forty new episodes, it seems like Regular Show is set for a long run.
