Netflix features some compelling series within the Jurassic World universe, and the newest one surprisingly improves one of the franchise’s weaker films. It’s common for popular sci-fi movies to get spin-off TV shows – Star Wars is a prime example of this strategy working well.
The animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with its seven seasons and over 100 episodes, successfully introduced a new generation to the Star Wars prequels, revitalizing the franchise and improving how audiences viewed characters like Anakin Skywalker. Netflix’s Jurassic Park series achieves the same thing – it’s one of their best shows and has a similar positive impact.
The Jurassic Park series currently includes seven films, with four belonging to the newer Jurassic World storyline. This branch of the franchise also spawned two animated series on Netflix, and one of those shows actually helps improve the quality of what is considered the weakest film in the series.
The TV show is called Jurassic World: Chaos Theory. It premiered on Netflix on May 24, 2024, and continues the story from the popular Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous. This new series follows the original teenage survivors of Isla Nublar – now young adults – as they face new challenges. Many fans are excited about Chaos Theory and see it as a great addition to the Jurassic World franchise.
Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Improves On Jurassic World Dominion In Nearly Every Way
Jurassic World Dominion, the last film featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, unfortunately doesn’t live up to its potential. Instead of exploring the interesting idea of humans and dinosaurs coexisting—something the previous movie set up well—the filmmakers introduced a complicated plot about genetically modified locusts, thinking it would be more thrilling. Jurassic World: Chaos Theory gets it right by focusing on the natural fear and tension that would arise from dinosaurs living among us, and even manages to use the locusts more effectively as a secondary element.
As a fan, I honestly felt like the Jurassic World: Chaos Theory series gave us so much more depth with Soyona Santos and Lewis Dodgson than we got in Jurassic World Dominion. In the Netflix show, Soyona was genuinely scary and manipulative – they really built her up to be a major threat, which didn’t quite come across in her brief appearance in Dominion‘s black market. And Dodgson? He was a much more compelling villain in the series, truly ruthless, whereas in Dominion he felt…forgettable. It was great to see more of their stories developed in Chaos Theory.
Jurassic World Dominion Does Have One Exciting Element That Chaos Theory Can’t Match
As a huge Jurassic Park fan, I was really let down by Jurassic World Dominion. The biggest problem was that it didn’t really use the return of Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum – the original trio! Seeing them team up with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard felt like a missed opportunity, especially since this was supposed to be a potential finale for everyone involved. The story just didn’t quite work for me. Honestly, watching the Chaos Theory series on Netflix afterwards did make the movie a little more enjoyable, but even that couldn’t recapture the magic of seeing those iconic characters together on screen like we remembered.
Neill, Dern, and Goldblum seamlessly reprised their roles as Alan Grant, Ellie Sattler, and Ian Malcolm, making their return in Jurassic World Dominion feel natural. The film beautifully concluded the storylines of these beloved characters, including the satisfying romantic connection between Grant and Sattler. Though these iconic figures don’t appear in the Netflix series, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory boasts a compelling new cast with intricate relationships, promising four seasons of captivating storytelling.
