Franklin Richards, offspring of Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman, is undeniably one of the mightiest characters in the Marvel Universe. His abilities span from predicting the future to constructing entire realities, leaving some theories suggesting that his subconscious wish for stability could be behind Marvel’s shifting timeline. Franklin’s powers are almost limitless, even causing awe among cosmic beings such as Galactus and the Celestials, with Galactus himself deliberately avoiding encounters with even a young Franklin. With Franklin Richards set to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in “Fantastic Four: First Steps“, now is the perfect moment to delve into the intricacies of how and why his powers function. So, let’s dive right in and explore the Marvel Universe’s remarkable Powerhouse!
The Most Powerful Mutant of All
The Fantastic Four obtained their powers due to being subjected to cosmic radiation during a space voyage, transforming them into who they are now. When Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman had their baby, it was discovered that the radiation influenced their genes significantly, causing their children’s births to differ in unusual ways. Their first child, Franklin, demonstrated mutant abilities. It remains unclear whether Sue or Reed possessed the X-gene potential prior to being exposed to cosmic rays or if the exposure activated a latent gene; however, it is well-known that Franklin was a mutant and is among the strongest of all characters in Marvel Universe, even compared to heavyweights like Jean Grey and Apocalypse.
From an early age, unlike most mutants who develop their powers during adolescence, Franklin displayed extraordinary abilities right from the start. The first recorded instance of his powers was in Fantastic Four #130, when as a toddler, he used his psychic powers to revive the Thing after a fight with the Frightful Four left him unconscious. Later, as a child, he showed the ability to foresee the future, as depicted in Fantastic Four #280, where he had a dream predicting Sue Storm’s transformation into Malice and her ability to defeat the entire Fantastic Four on her own. As Franklin grew older, his powers expanded beyond just psionic abilities. It was eventually revealed that he could manipulate reality itself. In Fantastic Four #245, he used these powers to transform himself into an adult, gaining full control of his potential and the ability to do anything he desired. However, despite this newfound power, he still maintained the mindset of a child and soon recognized that he lacked the emotional maturity to become virtually invincible.
The Power to Change Everything
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: Franklin possesses an extraordinary ability to mold reality according to his thoughts and creative visions. There appears to be no boundary to what he can accomplish if he imagines it. Despite not being able to prevent the multiverse’s collapse during the 2015 Secret Wars event, a feat that even the Celestials found challenging given Captain America’s efforts to thwart an Incursion and shatter the Infinity Gauntlet, this is hardly a significant shortcoming. In fact, immediately following the multiverse’s destruction, Franklin journeyed across the cosmos and aided in its restoration by crafting entirely new realities.
As a movie enthusiast, I must say, Franklin is practically omnipotent, often portrayed with an intimate bond with Galactus, much like the universe devourer himself, Franklin is destined to be the last being from his realm and transform into a cosmic entity in the next. His only restriction appears to be his mindset, for beneath that immense power lies a child who yearns for a typical childhood and a brief respite from his immense responsibility.
Franklin is nearly divine in power, but within his heart, he remains as human as the rest of us. The son of Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman, Franklin should embody our shared humanity. I eagerly await his MCU debut, fully expecting it to be nothing short of spectacular.
