DC’s Overlooked 4-Part Series Returns to Streaming — and It’s Free

A beloved, but often forgotten, DC TV show is now available to watch for free on Tubi.

Static Shock is a cartoon that aired in the early 2000s. While it was part of the popular DC Animated Universe, many fans don’t remember it as well as other shows because it featured a lesser-known hero alongside more famous characters.

Static Shock Is Streaming Free on Tubi

Static Shock was a groundbreaking comic book series. Based on the Milestone Comics character Static, created by Dwayne McDuffie and a team of artists, the series was notable for bringing Static into the DC Universe. This allowed for team-ups with iconic heroes like Batman and the Justice League, and was an important move in combining the Milestone and DC universes.

Initially, the creators planned for Static Shock to connect with the Teen Titans series. But because Static Shock was finished and ready to air earlier than Teen Titans, they changed plans. Instead of a crossover with the Titans, they decided to have Static Shock appear in a Season 2 episode of Justice League.

What Is Static Shock About?

I’m a huge fan of Static! He was designed to be Milestone’s version of Spider-Man, and the Static Shock series really delivers on that. It’s about Virgil Hawkins, a normal teenager who suddenly gets superpowers, and it’s awesome watching him try to juggle being a superhero with just, you know, being a kid and dealing with everyday life.

I absolutely loved the voice acting in Static Shock! Phil Lamarr was perfect as Virgil – it’s no surprise he also voiced Green Lantern John Stewart in Justice League and Justice League Unlimited. Jason Marsden really brought Richie Foley to life, and I always enjoyed watching their friendship – it was cool to see him become Gear later on! Kevin Michael Richardson gave Virgil’s dad, Robert, such a strong presence, and Michele Morgan was wonderful as Virgil’s sister, Sharon. They all really made the show special.

The first season of Static Shock is well-received, earning a 75% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers seem to love it even more, with an 86% positive audience score.

What Is Static Shock’s Future?

After DC Comics started including characters from Milestone Comics in its main stories, they’ve tried several times to bring those characters to the forefront. For example, Static joined the Teen Titans in the late 2010s. When DC revamped its entire comic book universe in 2011, a Static Shock solo series was part of the initial launch of ‘The New 52,’ but it was unfortunately canceled after just 8 issues.

In 2021, DC relaunched the Milestone Universe with t, featuring a new Static series. More recently, .

Following his appearance in the animated series Static Shock, Static also showed up in Young Justice. In 2020, Warner Bros. announced plans for both a live-action Static TV show and an animated movie featuring characters from Milestone Comics, including Static. However, there haven’t been any updates on these projects since then. Recently, James Gunn confirmed that Static won’t be included in the new DC Universe because of complex issues with who owns the rights to the character.

All 52 episodes of Static Shock are now streaming for free on Tubi.
