The 1990s are often considered a golden age for entertainment, and for good reason – it produced fantastic science fiction, romantic comedies, and other memorable films. However, the 1980s also delivered a wealth of great movies that people still love and consider classics.
It’s not just about feeling nostalgic; the 1980s produced some genuinely fantastic movies that remain classics today. Covering all sorts of genres – thrillers, fantasy, adventures, and more – these films are endlessly rewatchable, both for the memories they evoke and their quality. Luckily, many of them are now available to stream, and we’ve picked five of the best, along with where to find them this month.
5) Labyrinth (Netflix)

Many consider Labyrinth to be one of the best fantasy films ever made. A standout achievement for Jim Henson, it’s a beloved movie for those who grew up in the ‘80s, but it still captivates audiences today with its imaginative and sometimes scary story. The film follows Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a teenager annoyed with her baby brother and his possession of her favorite toy. When she jokingly wishes he’d be taken away by goblins, her wish comes true! She then has just 13 hours to navigate the labyrinth of the Goblin King, Jareth (David Bowie), and rescue her brother before he’s transformed into a goblin. It’s a fantastic movie filled with memorable moments, and you can currently watch it on Netflix.
4) Footloose (Paramount+)

Few musical movies are as enjoyable and lasting as Footloose. Released in 1984, the film follows Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon), a teenager from Chicago who moves to a small town where dancing and rock music are forbidden by Reverend Shaw Moore (John Lithgow)—who also happens to be the father of Ren’s love interest, Ariel (Lori Singer). Naturally, the town’s teens aren’t happy about the ban, and Ren tries to get it lifted. It’s a lively and thrilling film with a fantastic soundtrack, including the Academy Award-nominated songs “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” by Deniece Williams. You can watch it now on Paramount+.
3) The Princess Bride (Hulu)

Many fantastic fantasy movies exist, but few are as cherished as The Princess Bride. Directed by Rob Reiner, the film features a stellar cast including Cary Elwes and Robin Wright, and tells the story of Westley, a farmhand who embarks on a daring journey to rescue his beloved Princess Buttercup. Known for its humor, heartwarming moments, and memorable characters, it’s often hailed as one of the greatest films of all time. In 2016, it was even added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry for its cultural significance. You can watch it now on Hulu.
2) WarGames (Prime Video)

Released in 1983, WarGames might show its age in terms of technology, but its story and important themes still resonate today. With strong performances, it remains a classic sci-fi film that feels surprisingly relevant. The movie follows David Lightman, a bored Seattle teenager and skilled hacker, played by Matthew Broderick, who tries to improve his and his friend Jennifer’s (Ally Sheedy) grades. He accidentally taps into a top-secret military computer that controls the nuclear weapons, leading to a dangerous misunderstanding that almost starts World War III. Even though technology has changed, the film’s depiction of the potential for accidental nuclear war is still unsettling, making it a compelling watch. You can find it streaming on Prime Video.
1) The Goonies (Peacock)
Released in 1985, The Goonies remains a beloved adventure film with a lasting impact. Directed by Richard Donner, written by Chris Columbus, and based on a story by Steven Spielberg, it follows a group of resourceful kids from Astoria, Oregon. Facing the loss of their homes, they discover an old map and embark on a thrilling quest to find the hidden treasure of pirate One-Eyed Willy. The movie features a fantastic cast, including Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, and Ke Huy Quan. You can currently watch The Goonies on Peacock, and excitingly, a sequel is now being developed!
