Star Wars Quietly Retcons Its Cancelled TV Show (& Makes the Cliffhanger Ending Even Worse)

In August 2024, The Acolyte became the first live-action Star Wars TV series to be cancelled. The show was set during the High Republic Era—a time when the Jedi and the Republic were at their peak—and delved into the hidden dangers of a galaxy where the Sith were growing in power. Actor Manny Jacinto played a mysterious character known as the Stranger, who hinted at being a Sith, though Star Wars creators have been careful not to definitively label him as one.

Everything points to the showrunner, Leslye Headland, originally planning for the character known as the Stranger to be revealed as the founder of the Knights of Ren. Clues in the show’s music, confirmed by an official art book, and statements from Headland and a co-creator all supported this idea. However, with the show cancelled, those plans are now uncertain, and it seems Star Wars may have changed the Stranger’s backstory, implying he wasn’t connected to the Knights of Ren after all.

Star Wars Hints the Stranger Was Actually a Sith After All

Titan has just released a new version of Marc Sumerak’s The Secrets of the Sith, a detailed guide to the Sith presented as if it were written by Emperor Palpatine within the Star Wars universe. This updated edition now includes information about the series The Acolyte, offering Darth Sidious’s own interpretation of the events shown. A new section also covers the High Republic era, with Palpatine sharing his thoughts on that period.

Palpatine notes that the Sith appeared briefly towards the end of the High Republic era, but it took another hundred years for him to bring the Sith Order fully into the light. This statement suggests he believes the figure known as the Stranger is a Sith Lord, a belief he confirms when recounting the events of The Acolyte.

Before I trained with Darth Plagueis, another Sith tried to establish a new line of power. This individual, originally a Jedi Padawan under Master Vernestra Rwoh during the late High Republic era, turned to the dark side. He went by many names, including ‘the Stranger,’ a masked warrior who stirred up trouble among the Jedi while searching for someone to teach.

The Stranger gained a follower in a young woman named Mae-ho Aniseya, whose parents were powerful witches from the planet Brendok. Legends claimed Mae and her twin sister, Verosha, were born from the Force itself. Initially, Mae wanted to avenge her coven’s destruction by targeting the Jedi, but her plans changed when she learned Verosha had actually survived. Surprisingly, Verosha, who had tried to follow a path of goodness, ultimately embraced the dark side and stepped forward to become the Stranger’s apprentice in Mae’s place.

What Does Palpatine Mean By “Another Attempted Thread of Sith Lineage?”

It’s unclear exactly what this reveals about The Acolyte and its role in the Star Wars timeline. However, this new in-universe book gives us insight into how Palpatine interpreted these events. The way the timeline is presented strongly implies Palpatine believed this was a line of Sith apprentices created by his master, Darth Plagueis. This would explain why Plagueis was observing the Stranger – he saw her as his own apprentice.

Considering the Sith’s Rule of Two, it seems the Stranger was likely trying to find an apprentice to prove his strength, with the ultimate goal of challenging Plagueis. Osha and Mae’s unique origin, born at a powerful point in the Force, connects to abilities Plagueis was known to seek. This suggests the Stranger failed in his attempt, and Plagueis then began studying the twins. Eventually, though, Plagueis must have lost interest in this line of Sith history and instead focused on Palpatine.

Alongside the release of The Secrets of the Sith, Titan has updated Sumerak’s The Secrets of the Jedi. Like the Sith book, this new edition includes references to the Acolyte series, but these are more mysterious. This makes sense, as Luke Skywalker had less knowledge about events that happened a century before The Phantom Menace. Considering the time period of the High Republic, Luke reflects:

Rumors circulated that the Sith started to resurface during a period of great hope, and some even suggested that respected Jedi, like Vernestra Rwoh, might have unknowingly helped them. The truth, however, remains uncertain. Unfortunately, Luke Skywalker’s belief that we’ll never have a definitive answer is probably correct.
