The movie Sharknado, known for its incredibly outlandish premise of sharks being swept up in a tornado, first appeared as a TV movie in 2013 and surprisingly spawned five sequels before concluding in 2018. Although it never received an anime version, Sharknado is making a return – and with an unexpected partner. Get ready, fans of both anime and over-the-top aquatic adventures, because a truly bizarre crossover is coming in 2026.
I heard about a really strange movie pairing happening in Tokyo on June 7th! They’re showing Sharknado 6: The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time alongside the anime film King of Prism: Your Endless Call. It’s funny because these two movies couldn’t be more different – Sharknado is all about, well, sharks, and King of Prism focuses on ice-skating idols. There’s absolutely no overlap! Apparently, it’s happening at the Ikebukuro Humax Cinema thanks to a film distributor who loves shark movies and writes about them. They actually think both films are similar, claiming they both offer a kind of “brain relaxation through over-the-top entertainment.” It’s a pretty wild pairing, and you can find more details if you’re curious.
What is King of Prism?
If you missed King of Prism, it’s a unique anime series that combines the world of pop idols with competitive ice skating. The characters are performers who sing and skate! Starting in 2016, the show quickly became popular, leading to several movies and TV specials. The latest installment, King of Prism: Your Endless Call, came out last year, showing that fans are still very enthusiastic about this sparkly, ice-skating idol universe.
Although sharks have appeared in anime before – like the Shark Devil in Chainsaw Man – finding anime specifically about sharks can be difficult. However, one movie truly showcases how frightening they can be: Junji Ito’s Gyo: Tokyo Fish Attack. This horror film features terrifying aquatic creatures, including a particularly scary great white shark, emerging from the sea with mechanical spider legs. Given that genuinely frightening anime is rare, Gyo is a great choice if you want a unique and chilling shark experience.
