After 28 Years Later received good reviews and made over $151 million worldwide, the filmmakers seemed right to plan a complete three-movie series based on the 28 Days Later story. Sony was so optimistic about the plan that they reportedly approved the third film even before 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple came out. They hoped positive buzz would lead to another successful box office run, but that didn’t happen. The Bone Temple performed poorly, earning only $58.5 million globally. This put the third movie in question, but it now appears the project is still moving forward.
Alfie Williams, known for his role as Spike in the first two 28 Years Later films, recently posted photos on Instagram showing him practicing archery. His caption, “It’s Great to be Back,” has led fans to believe he’s getting ready to film 28 Years Later 3. You can see the post below.
Will 28 Years Later 3 Still Happen?
Wow, the ending of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple totally left me on the edge of my seat! It’s so obvious they’re building towards another movie, but honestly, I’m a little worried it might not happen. Making movies is a business, and if the studio doesn’t think a third film will make enough money, they could just cancel it. The Bone Temple didn’t do as well as the first one, so I’m not sure it’ll be easy to convince them to keep going. I really want to see how the story ends, but the studio needs to make a profit too, so it’s a tough situation.
As of today, there’s no confirmed release date for 28 Years Later 3. While the recent CinemaCon event didn’t offer any hints about when we might see the film—or even when production could begin—fans are still waiting for updates. However, it’s a good sign that actor Cillian Williams has been practicing archery again. Although he hasn’t mentioned the sequel directly, it’s likely this training is for his role in 28 Years Later 3, which should reassure those who were concerned about the film being cancelled.
If a third 28 Years Later movie is made, it will be interesting to see how Sony approaches it financially. The studio might try to lower the production costs to make sure the film can become profitable more easily. While The Bone Temple cost a relatively modest $63 million to make, it didn’t earn that much back, so Sony will likely look for ways to save money. Getting the project made might require filmmakers and studio executives to find some middle ground. Even James Cameron is trying to reduce the budgets for future Avatar films, so it wouldn’t be surprising if 28 Years Later 3 had to adjust its spending as well.
Despite some uncertainty, it seems like 28 Years Later 3 is still planned, and that’s what fans should expect until official reports say otherwise. However, a release is likely a ways off, as Cillian Murphy is currently filming A Quiet Place Part III, scheduled for 2027. He won’t likely be available to start the next 28 Years Later film until at least late this year, depending on how quickly the script is finalized and everything else is organized. While the wait for the final installment will be tough, it could actually be a good thing, allowing audiences to rediscover their excitement for the franchise before its return.
