Alex Murdaugh Murder Convictions Overturned by State Supreme Court

Alex Murdaugh is going back to court.

The South Carolina Supreme Court threw out Alex Murdaugh’s conviction for the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, on May 13th, and has ordered a new trial. He was originally convicted three years ago.

Murdaugh’s lawyers appealed his conviction in February, and the South Carolina Supreme Court agreed that some of their claims needed to be investigated further. Specifically, the court decided that allegations against Colleton County Clerk of Court Rebecca “Becky” Hill – that she may have improperly influenced jurors – deserved a closer look, according to a report from TopMob News.

The court’s decision stated that Hill improperly influenced the scales of justice, describing her actions during the March 2023 double murder trial as shocking and a severe attack on Murdaugh’s trustworthiness.

Elsewhere in the decision, Hill denied any allegations that she attempted to influence the jury.

In a statement to TopMob News, attorneys Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, representing Alex Murdaugh, said the court’s ruling confirms the legal system is functioning properly in South Carolina.

We acknowledge the court’s decision that the second trial needs to be handled differently than the first. The original jury heard over twelve hours of testimony regarding Alex’s financial crimes, but the court determined this was excessive and unfairly biased the proceedings. This evidence will not be allowed in the retrial.

As a long-time supporter of Alex, I was relieved to hear his legal team reiterate that he’s maintained his innocence from the very beginning – he never harmed his wife and son. We’re all hoping the next trial will be fair and follow all the proper legal procedures, as outlined by the court.

Alex Murdaugh’s lawyers, who had previously requested a new trial in 2024, criticized Maggie Hill’s involvement in the second season of the Netflix documentary Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal. In September 2023, Hill stated in an interview for the show that she believes Alex Murdaugh was the one who fired the shots.

After the court clerk spoke, Murdaugh’s lawyer, Griffin, said he was completely surprised in a statement.

Griffin explained that judges are ethically obligated to avoid publicly discussing whether someone is guilty or innocent while a case is still ongoing, including during appeals. He said he was responding to the situation as it unfolded, keeping this principle in mind.

TopMob News has tried contacting Hill’s lawyers but hasn’t received a response. Hill also didn’t comment when asked about statements made by Griffin.

Three years after being convicted, Alex Murdaugh’s murder conviction has been overturned. He was originally sentenced to two life terms for the deaths of his wife, Maggie, 52, and son, Paul, 22, who were killed at the family’s property in Moselle in June 2021. Murdaugh is also the father of 30-year-old Richard Alexander, known as Buster.

Throughout the trial, Murdaugh consistently claimed he didn’t shoot his wife or son, repeatedly stating he had never done so.

Despite Murdaugh’s claims, prosecutors demonstrated he was lying about his whereabouts on the night of the murders. They showed he wasn’t at his mother’s house as he’d stated, but instead was near the crime scene. This evidence came to light before his November 2023 guilty plea to over a hundred financial crimes – including money laundering, fraud, and tax evasion – impacting 18 victims.

During his trial in March 2023, he admitted to lying. He explained that as his addiction worsened, he would often become paranoid and find himself in difficult situations.

Last year, Hulu released a series called Murdaugh: Death in the Family which detailed the 2023 murder trial of Alex Murdaugh and the events surrounding it. If you’re curious about what the series presented and how accurate it was, read on to learn more…

Maggie Murdaugh, played by Patricia Arquette in the series Murdaugh: Death in the Family, is a central figure, but her inner thoughts during her family’s struggles remain a mystery.

So, the series’ creators had to improvise.

Honestly, learning about Maggie was fascinating. The way Erin Lee Carr, one of the creators, described it… Maggie was this incredible woman! She had her own life, a business in town, and she’d even been married young. Apparently, she had options, other people were interested in her, but Alex Murdaugh just… claimed her. It was like he just decided she was his wife. And what really got me was the idea that they could explore what her life really was like, what her marriage might have been like before all this happened, and even her relationship with her sister. It just opens up so many possibilities and gives you a much deeper understanding of everything. It’s just… captivating!

In the early morning of February 24, 2019, Paul Murdaugh was driving a boat while intoxicated after a night out. The boat crashed into the Archers Creek Bridge with several passengers on board: Morgan Doughty, Mallory Beach, Anthony Cook, Connor Cook, and Miley Altman.

Mallory was thrown overboard and died, while the others were injured.

Two months after being charged with boating under the influence resulting in death and serious injuries, Paul Murdaugh was killed along with his mother, Maggie Murdaugh, by his father, Alex Murdaugh, at their home in Islandton, South Carolina. Alex was awaiting trial in the felony case at the time.

I was completely riveted by Murdaugh: Death in the Family on Hulu. One of the most disturbing parts for me was seeing Alex Murdaugh, played by Jason Clarke, and his father, Randolph Murdaugh III (Gerald McRaney), at the hospital. It was clear they were trying to convince their sons not to talk to the police, and multiple sources confirmed that’s exactly what happened. It really showed how far they were willing to go.

Alex Murdaugh later claimed he didn’t try to influence Connor, but in the 2023 Netflix documentary Murdaugh Murders, Connor stated that Paul’s father approached him at the hospital and quietly told him to stay silent, promising to handle everything.

Paul had just begun speaking with the police when his grandfather, Randolph, arrived and immediately declared, “I am now his lawyer, and he will not be making any statements.”

In the documentary Murdaugh: Death in the Family, Alex Murdaugh, his wife Maggie, and sons Buster (played by Will Harrison) and Paul (played by Johnny Berchtold) travel to the Bahamas. While there, Paul, still upset by recent events, gets into a drunken altercation with two British tourists.

As someone who’s followed the Murdaugh case closely, I’ve poured over every detail from the days immediately following the boat crash. What’s really struck me is that nowhere in all the records and accounts do they mention taking a vacation at that time. It’s a complete absence, and it feels significant.

Paul and his then-girlfriend Morgan were vacationing in the Bahamas in 2017. Two British tourists they met there told Fox News in 2023 that they didn’t learn about the later Murdaugh case—including the boat accident—until after watching the Netflix documentary.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly things can change, and this story is a perfect example. Back in August 2019, I shared an old video from a trip with Alex Murdaugh and his then-girlfriend. After I tagged them both, Alex actually reached out to me directly on Instagram, asking me to remove the post. He simply said they were no longer together and weren’t supposed to be in contact with each other. It was a pretty direct request, and of course, I respected their privacy.

One of the most noticeable fictional moments in Death in the Family is when Gloria Satterfield (played by Kathleen Wilhoite) comforts Paul after the boat crash, telling him everything will be okay. This is clearly made up, as Gloria had actually died a year before the accident happened.

She passed away on February 26, 2018, after being hospitalized for about a month. According to her son, Alex, she fell while at the Murdaugh family home on Moselle Road. He told police she tripped over the dogs and fell down the outdoor steps.

Series co-creator Michael D. Fuller explained on the official Murdaugh: Death in the Family podcast that they decided to keep the character Gloria alive. He said this was to realistically portray her relationship with the family, especially Paul, and to explore how that relationship impacts the current storyline.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this scene in Death in the Family! It’s based on Mandy Matney’s incredible Murdaugh Murders podcast, and there’s this moment… so, Brittany Snow plays the journalist, and she’s at the hospital after the boat crash, and she locks eyes with Alex Murdaugh. It’s seriously chilling – this intense stare-down that just feels… loaded. I replayed it like five times! It’s like she knows something, and it’s absolutely captivating.

Though her podcast didn’t start until 2021, Mandy did see Alex as early as 2019, but it was in court.

Mandy described a tense encounter with Alex Murdaugh in court back in 2019. She said she made eye contact with him during a hearing for Paul Murdaugh, and he seemed as if he was going to walk over to her before the proceedings began.

She remembered another tense encounter with Alex while he was being escorted from the building for his trial. She said she was simply trying to leave, and he happened to be exiting at the same time, still in handcuffs.

Okay, so you HAVE to understand how much control Alex had. The book, Death in the Family, details this insane moment where he basically just… presented a health official to the Governor! And it wasn’t in some official setting, it was at a party… at the Murdaughs’ house! It was like he was just casually showing off who he controlled, like it was nothing. It really showed how deeply connected he was and how easily he could pull strings. I mean, seriously, the power he wielded… it’s just mind-blowing when you think about it!

On the show, Alex is trying to get a permit to start a business collecting jellyfish, and he’s offering the possibility of research funding for the state’s environmental agency, SCDHEC, to gain their approval.

Alex did attempt to launch a jellyfish business, but it failed in 2014 because of problems with permits and the environment. This was five years before the boat accident, and there’s no evidence he ever asked then-Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, for help.

According to Fuller, the character was primarily involved in numerous land deals and various other business ventures. They included this aspect in the story to create a specific Southern atmosphere, as it seemed like a fitting business for the setting.

Randolph III, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather as the top prosecutor for the 14th Circuit, received South Carolina’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Palmetto, on September 20, 2018.

The ceremony was held in front of the Hampton County Courthouse, and Randolph was surrounded by his large family, including Alex and Maggie.
