A key figure in House Stark’s lore has finally gotten a first look in House of the Dragon season 3.
To build excitement for the upcoming season on HBO, a new behind-the-scenes clip from House of the Dragon shows the cast and crew discussing how they created the show’s biggest moments. The preview also includes never-before-seen footage, and introduces new characters like Roderick Dustin (played by Tommy Flanagan), Torrhen Manderly (Dan Fogler), and Alysanne Blackwood (Annie Shapero).
Ever since the book Fire & Blood was released, fans have been eagerly waiting to see Black Aly appear on screen. She’s a renowned warrior and expert archer from the Dance of the Dragons, a noblewoman from House Blackwood who strongly supports Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. As the aunt of young Lord Benjicot Blackwood, Aly leads the archers of the Black Army in battles within the Riverlands – and a recent teaser for season 3 of House of the Dragon finally offers a first look at them.
Shapero makes a quick appearance as Black Aly during a battle, dressed in Blackwood colors and riding a horse with black paint boldly smeared on her face. This brief introduction hints at her significant role in the Targaryen civil war, and her actions have a major impact right as the fighting ends.
Okay, so I’m hearing that Milly Alcock – Black Aly – is coming back for season 3 of House of the Dragon, and she’s going to be in five out of the eight episodes! Apparently, she won’t be listed as a main cast member, but with that many appearances, it sounds like her character is going to play a really important role as things get intense during the Dance of the Dragons. It’s great to see her back, and it hints at some big stuff happening!
Please be aware that the following contains minor spoilers for George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, which is the basis for House of the Dragon. In Fire & Blood, it’s revealed that Black Aly marries Lord Cregan Stark after the Dance of the Dragons, making her an important figure in the history of House Stark. While characters like Ned, Sansa, Jon, Robb, Arya, Bran, and Rickon from Game of Thrones aren’t directly related to her, Black Aly is still considered a significant ancestor within the Stark family tree.
It’s currently unknown if season 4 of House of the Dragon will show the engagement between Black Aly and Cregan Stark, which happens right after the end of the war. However, Black Aly is likely to reappear in the show’s fourth and final season. Torrhen Manderly, a new character introduced in season 3, is also expected to be important during the final battles and the events following the war.
Alright, fans of Westeros, mark your calendars! Season 3 of House of the Dragon is hitting HBO and Max on June 21st, and this time around we’re getting eight episodes, released one by one each week. And the good news doesn’t stop there – HBO has already given the green light for Season 4, which we can expect sometime in 2028. It looks like we’ll be getting a new season every two years, which, as a viewer, I’m perfectly happy with!
