The Death Of Sherlock Holmes Is Perfect For The Detective’s Return After A Huge 2026 Release

Fans can look forward to a new Sherlock Holmes series in 2027. This project is expected to be a strong competitor to a hugely popular streaming show that premiered this year. Sherlock Holmes adaptations consistently perform well, as he’s arguably the most famous detective in all of fiction.

Although not every adaptation is a hit – the 2018 film Holmes & Watson, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, was poorly received with very low scores from both audiences (26%) and critics (10%) on Rotten Tomatoes – most Sherlock Holmes adaptations are generally successful. The character of Holmes, with his unique personality, consistently provides entertainment and wonder.

The Netflix films Enola Holmes, starring Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes, prove that there are always new and interesting ways to tell the detective’s story. Several Sherlock Holmes projects are currently in development, including a successful show planned for release in 2026 and a new, darker series that will explore a key moment in Holmes’s life.

I’m really excited about this new Sherlock Holmes series, “The Death of Sherlock Holmes,” coming to Sky in 2027! It’s going to explore what happened in the years everyone thought Sherlock was dead, right after that epic showdown with Moriarty at Reichenbach Falls – you know, from the original stories. Rafe Spall, who I’ve seen in Black Mirror, is taking on the role, and honestly, it feels like the perfect time for a fresh take on the character, especially with another big Sherlock project coming out in 2026.

2026 Brought Back Sherlock Holmes In A Fresh Way

Prime Video released all eight episodes of Young Sherlock on March 4th, and the British detective series quickly became a hit around the world. It was one of the streaming service’s most popular new shows this year, reaching the top spot on Prime Video’s charts. Even two months later, Young Sherlock remains popular, currently ranking as the 5th most-watched series on Prime Video globally, according to FlixPatrol. The show has received positive reviews, with an 84% critics’ score and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Young Sherlock” offers a fresh and entertaining take on the classic Sherlock Holmes stories and the world surrounding them. Hero Fiennes Tiffin plays a charming, smart, and funny young Holmes who is still developing the skills that will one day make him a legendary detective. At 19 years old, he’s just beginning his career and learning the ropes, and his exciting adventures are sure to captivate audiences.

As a film buff, I was really surprised to see that young James Moriarty – played by Dónal Finn – is actually Sherlock’s best friend in the show! Season one does a fantastic job of showing their friendship develop, and it’s genuinely heartwarming to watch their connection and playful teasing. But, it also subtly hints at the darkness within Moriarty, which is a clever way to foreshadow their future rivalry. Thankfully, because Guy Ritchie’s Young Sherlock became such a hit, Prime Video has renewed it for a second season – I can’t wait!

The Death Of Sherlock Holmes Is The Perfect Opposite Of Young Sherlock

With season 2 of Young Sherlock on the way, a great follow-up would be the 2027 film The Death of Sherlock Holmes. This new project offers a very different story from the Young Sherlock series. While Young Sherlock focuses on a teenage Holmes, this film will feature an older Sherlock, set after the defeat of his rival, Moriarty – who is currently a friend in the Prime Video show.

Given that we’re seeing multiple versions of Sherlock Holmes at the same time, it makes sense for them to be very different from each other. The idea of an older Holmes, thought to be dead and suffering from amnesia – inspired by The Death of Sherlock Holmes – provides a great contrast to the Young Sherlock series. This new, darker series will follow Holmes as he slowly recovers his memories while helping the son of the woman who rescued him after his fall with Moriarty. A new Sherlock Holmes show is definitely needed!
