Every Big Bang Theory Character Officially Returning for the Sequel Show, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

A spin-off of the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory is coming soon, focusing on the beloved character Stuart. Titled Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, the new show follows Stuart as he accidentally breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, causing a chain reaction that threatens all of reality. This forces him to journey through different universes to try and prevent total destruction. The trailer shows a post-apocalyptic world will be a key location, and fans can also expect to see some familiar faces from the original series make appearances.

Details about the cast of the new show are still limited, including whether any of the original The Big Bang Theory actors will make guest appearances. However, because the story involves the multiverse, anything is possible! Some actors from the original series are returning, though they’ll be playing different characters. The biggest question now is: which familiar faces will officially be in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, and what can we expect from their roles?

1) Stuart Bloom

Stuart Bloom, the main character in the spin-off, always seemed like an overlooked part of The Big Bang Theory. Though that began to shift towards the end of the original series, when he became a more regular character. Essentially, he was just the comic book store owner the group frequented, and didn’t have much of a personal life beyond that. He’s a man struggling to keep his business afloat while everything else in his life is falling apart.

The new show really focuses on Stuart, placing him at the heart of a huge, multiverse-spanning disaster that he unintentionally helps create. While the show features the familiar Stuart, it also introduces a version of him from another reality – one who is much more self-assured and understands the situation better. This alternate Stuart hints that there might be a way to fix or even undo everything that’s happened.

2) Bert Kibbler

Brian Posehn is returning as Bert Kibbler, a beloved recurring character from the original show. Bert, a sweet and somewhat awkward geologist, provides a relatable contrast to the often-intense personalities at Caltech, reminding viewers that not everyone is focused solely on achievement. Fans may remember him caring for Raj’s dog, Cinnamon, during Sheldon’s Nobel Prize event at the end of The Big Bang Theory.

Okay, so the new spin-off throws Bert right into the thick of a reality-bending crisis, and thankfully, they haven’t changed a thing about his personality. He’s still that sweet, clueless guy who always finds himself way over his head. It’s great because his science smarts are actually important to solving the problem, but let’s be real, he’s going to need a lot of help. He definitely can’t handle this one alone.

3) Denise

Denise, played by Lauren Lapkus, joined The Big Bang Theory later in the series, and she was a good fit because she brought something new. Introduced as a comic book store employee, she was deeply immersed in geek culture, but unlike many characters on the show, she was skilled at interacting with others. This made her a perfect match for Stuart, who eventually became her boyfriend.

The new series brings Denise back, and her relationship with an old friend remains a central part of her story – though she now has a new boyfriend named Gary, played by Tommy Walker. Throughout the show, Denise will be a voice of reason, managing to stay grounded even as the world falls apart around her.

4) Barry Kripke

Barry Kripke, played by John Ross Bowie, is a consistently frustrating and unforgettable character. From the moment he appears, you know he’s someone you can’t rely on, and that remains true in this new series. He’s incredibly smart and driven, but also loves to compete, push people’s buttons, and undermine others to get ahead.

In the original show, that character’s behavior was mostly played for laughs, but now it feels like it could cause real trouble. The new series adds another layer to this: not only is he a core member of the team as a famous physicist, but there’s also an alternate version of him who’s a powerful ruler. We don’t know much about this alternate version yet, but the trailer suggests he’ll be a significant antagonist.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe hits HBO Max on July 23.
