With all the excitement around the new team announcements, like the Fighting Avengers, players were starting to wonder about the single-player experience in Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. Arc System Works had mentioned it would feature a motion comic, but hadn’t said if that would include actual fighting gameplay.
Recently, the game developers shared more information in an interview with 4Gamer. When asked about a lengthy story mode, producer Takeshi Yamanaka explained that while it’s hard to say if it’s longer than previous games, there will be an ‘Episode Mode’ dedicated to the story.
So, the story started as a manga, and we actually animated each panel to make it move – it took a long time, but it looks really cool! There are five different teams you can play as, and the developers are saying that gives you around 10 hours of gameplay. They even went the extra mile with the DualSense controller – you’ll actually feel things happening, and there’s voice acting in ten different languages, way more than most games get!
Initially, there was concern when the publication stated the game wouldn’t feature traditional battles. Arc System Works clarified this, and the article now explains that ‘Episode Mode’ will include fully playable battles throughout the story. These battles are designed to be accessible and enjoyable for everyone, similar to reading a manga, and will enhance the interactive storytelling experience.
Was it a translation error, or just a simple mistake by the game developers or publisher? Either way, a story mode being missing wouldn’t be surprising. For instance, the story in Guilty Gear Strive isn’t playable at all.
Good news for players looking for a robust single-player experience! Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls is nearing completion and will launch on August 6th for PS5 and PC. The developers are still planning to announce more playable characters, so keep an eye out for future updates.
