Control Resonant Team Wants to “Fully Commit” to RPG Elements: “We’re Gonna Kind of Embrace That”

Before it became known as Control, Remedy Entertainment originally envisioned the game as the start of a role-playing game (RPG) series. This early ambition is still visible in features like dialogue options, gameplay-altering modifications, and the game’s open, exploratory design. Mikael Kasurinen, now the creative director for Control Resonant, was the driving force behind this initial concept.

In an interview with GamesRadar at gamescom latam 2026, Remedy’s Sam Lake explained that he initially envisioned Control as the first step towards building an RPG franchise. He wanted to explore what that kind of game would look like if it were made by Remedy, and Control was a way for the team to experiment and learn how to achieve that goal. He essentially built Control as a starting point for a larger RPG project.

For a developer accustomed to straightforward games that didn’t focus on building or crafting, this project was a new experience. We hadn’t previously included elements like branching storylines or side quests – it was the first time we’d attempted that kind of design.

According to Kasurinen, the team had never included dialogue choices – where players could choose what their character says – in their games before. He explains that his goal with Control was to create what he considered Remedy’s take on a role-playing game experience, something new for the studio.

I’m really getting a similar vibe to the first Control – still super into that weird, otherworldly stuff, and you can definitely feel the influence of books like the Southern Reach Trilogy and Roadside Picnic, plus shows like The X-Files. But honestly, the gameplay feels like a huge leap forward for Remedy. It’s like they’re finally really showing us what they’ve been building towards with their RPG ideas. It feels like the next big step!

I decided to move away from calling Resonant an action adventure game. We’re defining it as an action RPG, and we’re fully embracing that genre for Remedy’s new franchise. We plan to expand on this RPG focus even further in future installments.

So, it looks like Remedy is planning to keep making RPGs, which is awesome! It really makes you think about what they could do with expansions, though. With Control, they added cool new powers in The Foundation and then really blew our minds by connecting it to Alan Wake with AWE, giving us new places to explore and things to fight. If Resonant gets DLC, I’m hoping they’ll build on the RPG stuff even more and really expand the gameplay – maybe with some major new systems that make it even more engaging!

It’s still uncertain exactly when and how it will all come together, as a release date hasn’t been announced yet. However, Control Resonant is confirmed to be coming out this year on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
