Malia Obama, Sasha Obama Have Girls’ Night Out With Mom Michelle Obama

It’s a ladies’ night fit for a former First Lady.

Okay, so I totally lost it when I found out Malia and Sasha took Michelle to Funke! Can you believe it? It was just a few days after Mother’s Day, on May 11th, and they were all in Los Angeles. I’m obsessed with the Obamas, and seeing them enjoy a rare night out together at Funke? It made my week! Seriously, Malia, 27, and Sasha, 24, are the best daughters, and Michelle deserves all the happiness in the world.

The group kept their style relaxed and comfortable. Michelle wore ripped jeans with a green jacket and a green suede handbag. Malia chose a floral dress with black boots, and Sasha went with a matching denim jacket and jeans outfit.

Michelle Obama recently shared how she’s adjusting to life after her daughters left home, something she and her husband, Barack Obama, are experiencing together. Despite enjoying a nice dinner with her daughters, she’s been candid about the challenges of becoming an ’empty nester’.

With both daughters, Malia and Sasha, now college graduates—Malia from Harvard in 2021 and Sasha from USC in 2023—Michelle Obama shared that she and Barack are entering a new chapter in their lives.

On her podcast, IMO with Michelle Obama & Craig Robinson, Michelle Obama shared that her husband had reached the pinnacle of his career. She explained that now, both he and she are taking time to reflect on their next steps and figure out what they want to do and who they want to be in this next chapter of their lives.

It’s just the two of us again now. I’m just saying, it’s going to take time to get used to things. Every new phase takes adjustment.

Even though she still worries about her daughters, Michelle is happy they live together in Los Angeles. She was thrilled when Malia and Sasha told her a few years ago that they wanted to share a home.

You know, when my daughters told me they were moving in together, I simply said, ‘Let’s see how it goes!’ But honestly, it feels amazing knowing they’ve found comfort and support in each other. As a mom, that’s really all you can ask for – to see your kids finding happiness and a safe space with each other, even just around the kitchen table.

Now that you’ve seen photos of the Obamas enjoying a girls’ night out, let’s take a look back at how their family has grown and changed over time.

Barack Obama and Michelle met while he was working at the Chicago law firm Sidley & Austin to pay off student loans. Michelle was his advisor during his summer internship there.

Oh my gosh, I just adore how Barack described first seeing Michelle! He said he was completely struck by how tall and beautiful she was. And get this – apparently, she was actually relieved that his nose and ears weren’t as huge in person as they were in the firm’s directory photo! It’s just…the sweetest thing ever. I replay that moment in my head constantly, imagining how they must have felt!

After their first meeting, it took a while for Michelle to agree to go out on a date with Barack.

He confessed that he repeatedly asked her on dates, but she consistently turned him down. She explained, ‘I’m your advisor, and a relationship wouldn’t be right.’ He eventually offered to resign from his position, and she finally agreed to go out with him.

They went to see Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing for their first date, and afterwards shared their first kiss over ice cream at Baskin-Robbins.

Michelle recalled to 20/20 in 2018 that he made a smooth move, simply leaning in to kiss her. She said that kiss was the moment they fell in love and he became her boyfriend.

Two years after they started dating, Barack proposed to Michelle over dinner at a restaurant in Chicago. She was surprised because she didn’t realize he was ready to get married.

In her memoir, Becoming, she recalls him taking her hand and confessing that despite his deep love for her, he still didn’t understand the purpose of their relationship. She was immediately embarrassed and shocked, wondering if he was serious.

Oh my gosh, I was dying to know if they were finally going to take the plunge! They’d been talking about marriage all through dinner, going back and forth, and then… everything just stopped when the waiter brought dessert. But it wasn’t cake for Michelle! It was this gorgeous, dark velvet box, and when she opened it… a diamond ring! I seriously screamed. It was the most perfect moment, I swear!

Barack had been teasing me the whole time. It was all a playful trick, and it took me a moment to realize I wasn’t supposed to be angry. He’d deliberately gotten a rise out of me because he promised this would be the last time he ever brought up our silly marital disagreement, for as long as we both lived.

Over a year after Barack proposed on their date, he and Michelle got married on October 3rd at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago.

I’ll never forget our wedding day in October of 1992. Barack actually woke up with a terrible head cold! But somehow, by the time I was walking down the aisle to meet him, it was completely gone. We ended up dancing the night away, and honestly, twenty-five years later, we’re still having just as much fun. Of course, it’s not just fun – we’ve put in the work to build a strong partnership and really support each other as individuals. I truly can’t imagine navigating life with anyone else. I shared this memory on Instagram a few years ago, and it still feels so true.

Malia Obama, the oldest daughter of Barack and Michelle Obama, was born in Chicago on July 4, 1998. After growing up during much of her teenage years in the White House, she went on to graduate from Harvard University in 2021. She’s now pursuing her own career in entertainment and, for her 2024 short film, “The Heart,” chose to be credited as Malia Ann.

Barack Obama recounted a conversation with his daughter Malia on The Pivot Podcast about her decision to leave her last name off something she was doing. He said he warned her that people would likely recognize her, but she wanted people to experience it without knowing who she was beforehand. Obama believes his daughters actively avoid using their family name to their advantage.

I’ve always been fascinated by Sasha Obama! Born on June 10, 2001, she made history when her family moved into the White House – she was the youngest child to live there since little John F. Kennedy Jr. back in 1961. It’s amazing to see how quickly time flies; she recently graduated from the University of Southern California in May 2023, and I’m excited to see what she does next!

Michelle shared a sweet message on Instagram for her daughter Sasha’s 24th birthday in June 2025, posting a rare family photo. She wrote, ‘Happy birthday to my sweet girl! I can’t believe how fast time flies. I’m so proud of the woman you’ve become. Love you always!’

Barack Obama first served as a state senator in Illinois before being elected to the U.S. Senate. Initially, his wife Michelle wasn’t enthusiastic about becoming involved in politics as his career began.

In her book, Becoming, Michelle Obama explained that she wasn’t a fan of politicians and was hesitant about her husband entering politics.

Despite her qualms, she supported Barack throughout his campaign and time in office.

He told Scott Pelley in a 2020 interview with 60 Minutes that he came to realize, even while working, how much he appreciated his partner’s forgiveness. He described it as an act of kindness he felt he didn’t earn, and expressed his gratitude for it.

In 2008, after winning the election, Barack Obama publicly thanked his wife, who was becoming the nation’s First Lady.

In his victory speech, Barack Obama credited his wife, Michelle, with being his constant source of strength and love. He described her as his best friend of 16 years, the foundation of their family, and the future First Lady of the United States.

Barack and Michelle Obama were separated for their 20th wedding anniversary because Barack was in Denver, Colorado, participating in the first presidential debate of the 2012 election. Despite the distance, he made sure to publicly acknowledge and celebrate her.

Tonight, I want to share something special. Twenty years ago, Michelle Obama said ‘yes’ to marrying me, making me the luckiest man in the world. Happy anniversary, my love. This time next year, we won’t be celebrating in front of so many people!

Barack’s opponent, Mitt Romney even joined in on the well wishes.

During the debate, Mitt Romney congratulated President Obama on his anniversary, adding with a touch of humor, “I’m sure this is the most romantic place you could have hoped for – right here with me.”

The Obamas later celebrated with a dinner at Bourbon Steak in Georgetown.

Barack Obama won a second term as President of the United States in 2012. The victory was a moment of celebration not just for him, but also for his wife, Michelle, who was a key supporter throughout his campaign.

Oh my gosh, you guys, it’s SO clear how much Barack loves Michelle! He was on Oprah back in 2011, and he just gushed about her. He said he literally couldn’t have done any of it without her. Not just as First Lady, which she was AMAZING at, but just…as his everything. He said she’s his rock and he relies on her constantly, every single day. It’s just the sweetest thing ever, honestly!

In his farewell address as president, Barack Obama warmly thanked his wife for her support.

In his 2017 farewell speech, Barack Obama spoke directly to his wife, Michelle, saying she’d been much more than just his wife and the mother of his children – she was his closest friend. He acknowledged she stepped into a public role she hadn’t sought, and excelled at it with elegance, determination, and a great sense of humor. He expressed his immense pride in her, and in the positive impact she’d had on the nation.

Since leaving office in 2017, Barack and Michelle Obama have enjoyed a more private life, which Barack Obama has said has been a welcome relief for his wife.

You know, after leaving the White House, I’ve noticed a real shift in Michelle. She’s just seemed so much more relaxed and genuinely joyful. It’s been wonderful! It’s allowed us to really savor the deep connection we’ve built over the years, and honestly, reconnect as friends too. It’s a beautiful thing to experience after so long together.

The couple posted sweet tributes for each other on social media to celebrate 30 years of marriage.

Michelle Obama celebrated her 20th wedding anniversary with Barack Obama, sharing a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter). She wrote, “Happy anniversary to the man I love! These past 20 years have been an incredible journey, and I’m so thankful to have him in my life. Here’s to many more years together. I love you @BarackObama.”

And he quickly returned the favor.

Barack Obama playfully commented on Instagram, wondering why his partner hasn’t aged while he has after 30 years together. He then sweetly added that finding his life partner was the greatest prize he could have ever hoped for, and wished them a happy anniversary.

I was completely moved watching Michelle speak at the DNC this year. Her 20-minute speech was incredible, and the way she introduced Barack, calling him ‘the love of my life,’ was just beautiful. They shared such a warm hug afterward, and Barack was clearly so proud of her, making sure everyone knew how amazing she is. It was a really special moment.

Barack Obama jokingly told the audience he was energized, even though he knew following Michelle Obama’s speech was a tough act to follow.
