PlayStation Shutting Something Else Down, But It’s Not a Studio This Time

Things have been a little rough lately with Sony shutting down studios, and it looks like it’s not over yet. I just heard about another closure under the PlayStation umbrella, but this one’s different – it’s not a whole game development team, it’s a smaller operation. It’s still sad to see, though.

PlayStation quietly acquired the tournament website Repeat.gg in July 2022. This purchase, along with their acquisition of the Evo fighting tournament, signaled a larger effort to become more involved in the competitive fighting game community.

The company initially planned an event but later withdrew and sold its ownership last year. Now, the Repeat.gg website is shutting down. A recent post on the website stated, “After careful consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision to close the platform.”

Looking at the website, you’d never guess PlayStation was behind it – there’s almost no sign of Sony or any PlayStation branding. But the deal definitely happened, as Steven Roberts, then vice president of global competitive gaming, explained when it was announced:

As a huge fan, I’m so excited to see what comes next! The team is working with Repeat.gg to find even more ways for us to get involved in competitive gaming and bring even more awesome esports content our way. This feels like the beginning of something really special, and I can’t wait to hear what they announce next!

We struggle to think of any time the website or collaboration was mentioned by PlayStation since.

Sony has recently faced criticism for closing several game development studios, including Bluepoint Games, Dark Outlaw Games, PixelOpus, and London Studio. While these closures are unfortunate, they are less extensive than previous rounds of studio shutdowns, and the overall impact appears smaller.

The closure of Repeat.gg is undoubtedly a negative event, as people are losing their jobs and income.
