First 10 Members of Justice League International, Ranked by Power

A well-loved take on the Justice League emerged in 1987 with the creation of Justice League International. Developed by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, and Kevin Maguire, the team first appeared in Justice League #1 (1987), which was soon retitled Justice League International starting with issue #7. This version was a gamble, as it couldn’t rely on major heroes like Superman or Wonder Woman, instead focusing on lesser-known characters alongside Batman. Despite this, it became incredibly popular, launching characters like Blue Beetle and Booster Gold into the spotlight. The series’ humorous approach was a key factor in its success and appeal.

The Justice League International has featured a diverse range of heroes, from those with reality-altering abilities like Captain Atom to those who rely on technology, such as Blue Beetle. Here’s a ranking of the ten most powerful original members, based on their strength and impact, not how well-known they are.

10) Blue Beetle

Ted Kord is the Blue Beetle who was an original member of Justice League International. Unlike many heroes, he doesn’t have any superpowers – he relies entirely on his incredible intelligence and inventions. While he’s a skilled fighter with some self-made weapons, he’s often portrayed as an older, somewhat out-of-shape hero who’s the target of jokes. A bright spot in the series was his close friendship with Booster Gold, and his death, caused by Maxwell Lord, remains one of the most heartbreaking moments in DC Comics history.

9) Booster Gold

Booster Gold became a member of Justice League International starting with issue #4. Originally from the 25th century, Michael Jon Carter was a former football player who fell from grace. He traveled back in time after stealing historical items related to Superman and decided to become a hero, hoping to gain fame and recognition. He’s assisted by Skeets, a smart security robot from the future that operates his suit and provides him with information about the past. Booster Gold’s suit gives him the ability to fly, incredible strength, energy blasts, and a protective force field. While powerful when fully charged, his time with the JLI often showed the suit malfunctioning or running out of power at the worst possible moments.

8) Black Canary

Dinah Lance is the Black Canary, and she was one of the original members of the team. She’s actually the second Black Canary in DC Comics, following in the footsteps of her mother, Dinah Drake, who was Black Canary in the Justice Society of America. Dinah is a highly trained martial artist, having learned from Wildcat (Ted Grant), but her real power is a sonic scream. She uses this scream both to attack enemies and to control large groups, and it makes her physically stronger than heroes like Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. She left the Justice League International relatively early on to team up with Barbara Gordon in the Birds of Prey.

7) Batman

Batman was one of the original members of Justice League International, and the most well-known hero on the team. Though he doesn’t have any superpowers, Batman is in peak physical condition, a master detective, and a brilliant strategist. He funds all of his crime-fighting equipment and technology through his family’s company, Wayne Enterprises. Batman is prepared for any opponent, even those with superpowers – he has backup plans for almost everyone. However, he’s still human, so he isn’t as powerful as some of the other members. Like Black Canary, he left the team soon after Maxwell Lord became its leader.

6) Mister Miracle

Scott Free is known as Mister Miracle, and he’s one of the New Gods from the planet New Genesis. Originally the son of Highfather, he was traded to the dark world of Apokolips as a child. There, he endured brutal training under Granny Goodness before escaping and marrying Big Barda, another escapee. As a founding member of a powerful team, Mister Miracle is among its strongest fighters. He possesses incredible strength, speed, and is nearly immortal, alongside masterful combat skills. He also wields a Mother Box, granting him access to extraordinary powers from other dimensions. This unique physiology makes him significantly more powerful than even Batman, and a formidable opponent for most villains.

5) Guy Gardner

Guy Gardner was an original member of the Justice League International and is incredibly powerful as a Green Lantern. However, his temper and rebellious nature often made him unpredictable during his time with the team. Like other Green Lanterns, he wields a powerful ring that proves he’s worthy of the title, granting him immense abilities. His ring’s ability to match and amplify the powers of others puts him on a higher tier than even heroes like Mister Miracle, making him a truly formidable force.

4) Doctor Fate

The Doctor Fate who appeared with Justice League International was originally Kent Nelson, the original Doctor Fate from the Justice Society of America. After a 1987 miniseries focused on the character, he passed the mantle on to Eric and Linda Strauss. Doctor Fate’s abilities are entirely magical, derived from the Helmet of Nabu and the Amulet of Anubis, which allow him to channel the power of the Lord of Order, Nabu. He’s incredibly powerful, even capable of fighting the Spectre to a draw, making him one of DC’s strongest magic-users. He surpasses all those ranked below him in power, and some believe he could potentially be as powerful as Martian Manhunter.

3) Martian Manhunter

Okay, let me tell you about Martian Manhunter. He’s one of the original Justice League members, a true cornerstone of that team. He and Batman were the only ones who stuck around when the League transitioned into Justice League International, though even Bats eventually moved on. This guy, J’onn J’onzz, is seriously powerful – we’re talking Superman-level strength and toughness. But here’s the thing: he actually surpasses Superman in certain ways. I mean, telepathy, shapeshifting, invisibility… he’s got it all! The only thing that really gets to him is fire, which is a pretty significant weakness. Honestly, on most power rankings, he’d be at the top. But there are two other JLI members who just edge him out.

2) Captain Atom

Captain Atom became a member of the Justice League International with issue #7, and fully debuted with the team in the following issue. Originally Nathaniel Adam, he was an Air Force pilot during the Vietnam War. A nuclear experiment fused him with alien metal called Dilustel, granting him access to the Quantum Field and incredible powers. He can withstand a nuclear blast up to 100 kilotons without being harmed, and his potential power is limitless. In the story Captain Atom: Armageddon, he demonstrated the ability to alter reality itself – a feat beyond the capabilities of even powerful heroes like Martian Manhunter and Doctor Fate, making him exceptionally powerful and potentially dangerous.

1) Shazam

Captain Marvel was the strongest member of the original Justice League International, and his appearance marked his return after the DC Universe was reimagined following the ‘Crisis’ event. Captain Marvel is actually Billy Batson, a boy who can become a superhero by saying the word ‘Shazam!’ This transforms him, granting him incredible abilities: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the endurance of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury. He’s as physically strong as Superman, but because his powers are magical, he can even harm Superman with magical lightning. While no other Justice League International member could match his power, Captain Marvel left the team relatively early because his immature personality made it difficult for him to fully commit.
