Obsession – REVIEW

It must be incredibly difficult for men who become fixated on a woman, start dating her, and then discover she’s either seriously emotionally troubled or even dangerously unstable. However, this isn’t a story about Prince Harry; it’s about how wanting something badly can backfire when it becomes an unhealthy obsession.

Wish fulfillment…..

The story revolves around Bear (Michael Johnstone), who works at a music store and has a crush on his colleague, Nikki (Inde Navarrette). While Nikki seems interested in him, Bear struggles to turn their connection into a relationship. He gets a chance to act when Nikki loses her necklace, and he replaces it with a new one from a quirky shop selling crystals, tarot cards, and other spiritual items – a place our editor conveniently misinterprets as justification for their frequent visits to The Nags Head pub and consumption of various alcoholic beverages. (Apparently, that’s grounds for dismissal – Ed).

You’re my Obsession….

Bear buys a magical item called the ‘One Wish Willow’ hoping it will make Nikki fall in love with him, and surprisingly, it works. However, his wish quickly turns into a problem, not just for him, but for everyone around him. At first, his friends don’t believe anything is wrong, but they soon realize Nikki’s behavior is becoming disturbingly obsessive, especially after a night out with the group.

See it?

The story’s setup is a bit predictable, but the theme of unhealthy obsession in relationships is relatable, and this film takes it to disturbing extremes. Inde Navarrette gives a fantastic and frighteningly believable performance as Nikki, and her nickname, ‘Freaky Nicky,’ becomes increasingly fitting as her obsession grows. While Bear’s disappointment when things don’t go as planned is understandable, his weakness and unwillingness to end the toxic relationship make it hard to feel sorry for him. This feature film debut from writer and director Curry Barker follows a successful short film on YouTube that quickly gained him attention. Though ‘Obsession’ feels a bit lengthy and loses momentum near the end, it suggests a promising future for Barker in the horror genre.
