Is Subnautica 2 crossplay? Multiplayer across platforms explained

After a long wait, Subnautica 2 is here, but you might be wondering if it’s crossplay?

This game lets you play with friends in a co-op mode, but what if they’re playing on a different device than you are?

As a huge fan, I’ve been looking into whether Subnautica 2 will have crossplay, and here’s what I’ve found out about how multiplayer is planned to work across different platforms.

Is Subnautica 2 crossplay? Multiplayer across platforms explained

Yes, Subnautica 2 has full crossplay support across PC and Xbox Series X/S consoles.

However, teaming up with friends on different gaming platforms isn’t as straightforward as sending a Steam invite. You’ll need to use the Friend Code system instead.

To play with friends, one person needs to start a game first. On the main screen, choose ‘Host Multiplayer’ to create a new world.

After starting the game, go to the menu and choose ‘Friends List’. You’ll find two boxes at the top of the screen that deal with Friend Codes.

Ask your friend to go to their Friends List and copy the code shown at the very top of the screen.

In your game, paste their Friend Code into the second text box and hit ‘Add Friend’.

Okay, so to invite someone, I just scroll through my friends list until I find the person I want. The little icon next to their name tells me if they’re currently playing on Xbox or Steam, which is super helpful!

To invite someone to the game, move your mouse over their name and click ‘Invite’. Once they accept, they’ll join automatically!

Subnautica 2 will feature multiplayer, but it will be limited to a maximum of four players simultaneously. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to play with more than four people, no matter which platform you’re using.
